Dedication
To Dad in appreciation of far too many things to list here, but especially of the fun we have had together lately
To my elementary school art teacher, Doris Rogers, and to my high school English teacher, Lee Smith your commitments to excellence and creativity have inspired me for decades beyond my school years
To my kids, grand young'uns and other friends and family who have been such enthusiastic recipients of my 90-Minute Quilts
To my students who inspire me to be the best teacher I can be
And to the ever-increasing expression of the creative spirit within us all which, when nurtured, showers us with an abundant cascade of joy and well-being!
Acknowledgments of Appreciation
First, I extend my heartfelt thanks to Sarah's Thimble Quilt Shoppe where most of the quilts seen in these pages were created. It is only with the Shoppe's generosity in providing the space in which to create that the dream of this book became a reality.
Thank you to all the companies listed in the Resources Section (page 154) that offered advice, assistance and products for the projects in this book.
I continue to be appreciative to Bernina of America and Pfaff for their gracious assistance in my projects over the years.
I also appreciate the extra fast, beyond-the-call-of-duty service of both TrainFabrics (for the I N T RAINING quilt fabrics on page 140) and AbbiMays (for the flannel backing used in the G IVE 'E M S OMETHING TO T ALK A BOUT quilt on page 53).
I am delighted to acknowledge, with appreciation, the work of guest contributors elinor peace bailey (a doll goddess who spells her name in all lower-case letters), Susan Deal, Carole Dull, teen contributors Abigail Fenn and Hayley Keon, and the Girl Scouts of Troop 2286. Their work added a great deal of charm and inspiration to these pages.
To my friend, Trish Schmiedl, who is an amazing digitizer and who translated my sketches into beautiful machine embroidery designs for the Aztec Dreams Shawl (page 142).
My heartfelt thanks goes to the divine quilter goddesses who stitched up some of the early experimental projects, as well as many of the projects that appear in this book: Carole Dull, Robin Fenn, Abby Geddes, Gloria Hurban, Peggy Jebavy, Mary Menzer, Sarah Norman, Cynthia Rudy, Deborah Renfrow, Adelaide Rush, Barbara Sheipe and Kathy Thompson. Their attention to detail and creative suggestions added a great deal to the flavor of this book, and I pay homage with gorgeous garlands of thanks at their feet.
I joyfully extend appreciation to Jerry and Esther Hicks, Norma Eckroate, Wendy Elwell and the rest of my uncannily creative cohorts for an eclectic range of innovative inspiration on this hands up in the air, living on the edge, hollerin' at the top of our lungs white-water-rapids ride down the stream of life. It's a joy to romp with you!
I thank all those at Krause Publications who have extended their helpful hands in the birth process of this book, including acquisitions editor Christine Doyle, designer Steven Peters, production coordinator Greg Nock, photographer Christine Polomsky and illustrator Ron Carboni.
And I appreciatively acknowledge my fabulous editor, Kelly Biscopink. When I was first given her name, I thought, She must be the perfect editor for my book because her name has two of my favorite colors in it! And my first impression has proven, to my deep delight, to be absolutely true.
A note from the author
My 90-Minute Quilt techniques offer fun, fast and easy ways for quilters with busy lives to get projects done in record time. At last there's a way to get that crib quilt finished before the new baby leaves for college! And when making community service quilts, I can happily stitch up several in a day, allowing me to contribute to charity but still have time to devote to my more complex projects.
The name for these techniques comes from the 90 minutes of stitching time it takes to sew the basic 30 41 baby quilt. This includes piecing, quilting and binding, with a built-in rod pocket for hanging. If you haven't made one before, expect to spend some time digesting the instructions. But before you know it, you'll be speeding along, finishing projects before you are tired of looking at them.
In this sequel to 90-Minute Quilts: 15+ Projects You Can Stitch inan Afternoon, half-square triangle units have been included, in addition to the squares used in the basic baby quilts. This greatly expands the design possibilities! While these more complex projects require added stitching, and therefore a little more time, additional fast options are offered.
