Dedicated to my mother, Toshimi Young, without whom I wouldnt be where I am today. You have instilled in me confidence, strength, perseverance, forgiveness, and love for myself.
Thank you for this!
To my amazing husband, Aaron. You are my rock, my biggest fan, and my motivator. Without you by my side, none of this would have been possible. You always inspire me to be better and do better. I love you for that.
To my awesome kiddos, Salina, Sierra, Spencer, Natasha, Jackson, and Gavin. Thank you all for making me the best mom I can be. You have taught me the true meaning of patience and unconditional love.
I also want to dedicate this book to all the awesome women I have met in my lifetime. All of you have taught me lessons good and sometimes not so good. I have learned from both and will continue to GROW!

Introduction
I dont miss being young.
For all of the very real, scary things that women have spent thousands of years overcoming, sometimes I wonder if theres anything that society wants us to be more afraid of than getting older. Well maybe a pandemic qualifies.
And every day, weve got a million different voices trying to tell us how to look, how to act, how to dress, when to show skin, when to cover up, when to speak, when to shut up. Its almost like they think were just here for everyone elses enjoyment!
Once we get old, they want us to believe we lose our usefulness to the world. And every product thats ever marketed to us seems to be about stopping the clock, going back in time, or making us young again, as if our age is something to be ashamed of.
Well, Im calling bullshit.
Life Doesnt End At Middle-Age
My name is Mayumi Muller, and, at the time of this writing, Im fifty-two years old. Im a mother of three and a step-mom of two. Im also one half of a power couple (more on that later) that, to date, owns ten businesses across the Pacific Northwestbut thats a different book, and my husband already wrote it.
My story is hardly a conventional one. I was born in Japan in the late 60s. My mother is Japanese and my father, who died when I was just eighteen months old, was black. We moved to the United States when I was in first grade. We started in San Antonio, Texas, but ultimately wound up in Seattle, Washington. Despite my moms best efforts, I eventually dropped out of college to pursue a career in modeling, which took me all the way to Europe, then back to Chicago, and eventually L.A. When I met my first husband, I finally settled back down in Seattle. A couple of marriages and a few Shih Tzu puppies (the real loves of my life) later, here I am.
And thats it, right? Now that Im settled into a great marriage with amazing kids, my story is over. I have nothing left to do but relax into a post-menopausal march toward irrelevance...
At least, thats what I gather from most women I talk to about life after forty.
Permission To Be More
One of the reasons I decided to write this book is because of a funny little question that women of all ages have asked me: Mayumi, whats your secret?
If Im being honest, its a question that I find both flattering and a little troubling.
Thats because, deep down, I think theres something else going on when women ask me that. Whats your secret? is actually code for I cant.
I cant be fit.
I cant dress the way I want.
I cant have a great marriage.
I cant have the kind of job I really want.
I cant prioritize my health.
I cant go out and have fun.
I dont know what it is about us girls, but it feels like we always need to put everyone else in our lives first. Our spouses, our kids, our managers, our employees, our friends. Its like we spend our whole lives focused on making sure everyone around us feels okay, but we forget to stop and check in with ourselves.
Women Ive met often make the assumption that I have had a good and easy life. They see how I look, or how I dress, or my glass-half-full attitude, and they assume I didnt have to struggle to get to where I am now.
So when they ask me to share the secrets to my success, I dont think they mean the part about my mom having to move us out of Japan because I was being treated like a second-class citizen. I dont think they mean the part about giving up on my dreams of singing on a full-ride scholarship just to follow an abusive boyfriend. I dont think they mean the part about being passed over for work because of the color of my skin, or the experience of living through two failed marriages.
I think theyre just hoping that theres an easy explanation for why their lives havent turned out the way they may have always pictured them.
They are, understandably, scared that theyre going to live the rest of their lives being stuck taking care of everyone but themselves; scared that getting in shape, or changing their diet, or even just finding the right clothes is just too hard.
