General Introduction
You cant do it
This is impossible science says...
You should just give up or at least you must choose
There was a moment, a little over 15 years ago, where these were my thoughts. More than thoughts, it was like a voice in my head trying to talk me out of my decision.
The choice that voice in my head was telling me about was the one between sticking with my ethical (and health) recent decision to fully go vegan after a period of wavering vegan attempts and keep going with my intense training as a bodybuilder (and maybe my job as a trainer too?).
That voice was trying to convince me that, even if being a vegan and being a bodybuilder were both important things to me, they just couldnt go together.
It was one thing or the other. Cant have both.
The voice was very compelling, telling me about how building mass needed animal protein, at least in supplements, and how the intense workouts I was undergoing were too much to bear with the only help of plant-based food, and even if I was very firm and confident of my decision of going vegan I was considering that maybe I should have actually pick one.
After all, I thought, I could still work out, just ease up a little, and would have still been able to go on with my trainer job, and, after all
And then it hit me.
Suddenly, I realized.
I remember that moment like it was yesterday. I was walking back home from the gym, as I always did, since from the gym to my place it was a nice twenty-minute walk, that used to be my recap moment of the day, when I would think about the day that ended and plan the day after.
That night was cold and drizzling, and from under the hood I remember the yellow light of the streetlamps reflecting in the puddles when my stream of thoughts stopped for a second and I realized.
This is not my voice...
This voice is not my voice
Right. That voice trying to convince me that I could not be a vegan and an athlete was not my voice. It was the voice of all the people I told about me being a vegan. It was the voice of all their, mostly non requested, advice. I had just kept their words and gave them my voice, but now I was realizing that it didnt make any sense.
They were neither vegans nor athletes or bodybuilders. They were not scientists either, or nutritionists (and if they were, they didnt want to question the textbooks) or anything but regular people with their opinions, mostly based on hearsay, and with little willingness to change their minds. Food choices are one of them
Just, there are some topics anybody feels entitled to have their say in. Let me be very clear on this: most of these people were my friends and family, people that are still in my life and that I really love. And I know that their interference came from a good place. They did strongly believe in what they told me, and they were sure that it was in my best interest.
They werent the problem. I was the problem.
I was just accepting that anything coming from them was true, only based on the fact that they cared about me, and that they all agreed.
I did not question them. Not enough at least. After all, what did they know about veganism and muscles? What did they really know?
And then I decided that that would have stopped. I needed to find my own path, and I could not afford to let their common peoples opinions have a say in it
Did I know more than them? Well, to be honest, no. I didnt.
But it was my goal, and it was up to me to tell if it was or wasnt possible.
Now, they were different times, the internet was not the same as today. Information was not as easy to find, but this was my new mission and I began to study and And thats enough talking about me.
Im Just happy that today it is considered (almost) normal to be vegan while having hard and intense training, and that a vegan athlete can now have access to much more information that it could have back then.
Here you have my three books put together:
The Vegan Bodybuilder
Vegan Cookbook for Athletes
The Vegan Bodybuilder Cookbook
I hope youll enjoy and get some inspiration out of them.
Or, at least, some good recipes to bring to your table.
PS I always love getting feedback from my readers, and I always reply, maybe not immediately but I do it. So feel free to share your thoughts at zhnardella@gmail.com
