Mike Westin

Mike was ten years old when his interest in sailing began, with racing dinghies. In his teenage years he was active as a Sea Scout, and spent many summers working as a sailing instructor before training on tall ships at the age of 16. A few years later, he joined the Navy and served for one-and-a-half years. When he was 30, he set off for one-and-a-half years on his first long ocean crossing across the Pacific. He has been a volunteer crew/skipper at a local lifeboat station since 2006, and has also trained lifeboat skippers in high-speed navigation (35+ knots). Mike's formal qualifications include a Yachtmaster Offshore, ship's engineer and many others.

Mike is currently out cruising again, freelancing while anchored wherever there is decent internet connection. Most of this book was written on a boat in the Caribbean Windward Islands.

Olle Landsell

When he was very young, Olle borrowed an Optimist dinghy, but did not know how to sail. A few minutes later, the wind pushed Olle's dinghy hard against the steel foundation of a nearby bridge and he realised that 'sailing is wonderful!' A lifelong passion had begun.

After a number of years' cruising the Baltic and the North Sea areas, mostly single-handed, Olle made a solo cruise to the Caribbean and back in his 6-metre (20-foot) engineless double-ended cutter. His experiences on the Atlantic became the best-selling book Inside the Head of a Solo Sailor.

Now retired, he sails, paints and illustrates with inspiration from the beautiful Swedish archipelagos. With BAs in both art and music, he has worked as a musician and for many years as an illustrator for books and magazines.

Both Pr and Nina are retired senior physicians and are specialists in general and vascular surgery and anaesthesia/intensive care/pain management with 35+ years of experience in emergency care. They also hold academic positions as associate professors at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.

They have sailed together for more than 40 years and made a six-year cruise with their Hallberg-Rassy 36 Osophine to the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and the canals of Europe. Pr and Nina have been giving master classes in first aid to cruisers for the past 12 years.

They have also been active life boat skippers since 2010 and are responsible for a life boat station on the Swedish east coast.

How to use this book

This book is certainly not intended to be one of those theoretical text books that you need to memorise to pass an exam to be able to legally go out with your own boat.

Whilst the suggested methods in this book do touch upon approved curricula, much of the content is the result of many years' experience on the sea as ocean cruisers, life boat crew/skippers and medical specialists (in the first aid chapter).

We have compiled these best practices by using our own combined experience as well as the learnings of other seasoned cruisers, professional mariners and life boat crew.

The foundation for this book is that the skipper is 100 per cent responsible for their crew and boat. Too many boatowners do not try to sort out a pickle they have got themselves into. Some would rather lift the telephone or press the button on an EPIRB to ask someone else to rescue them, even if this is in the middle of the ocean and there is no risk of life.

As a result, there have been proposals raised that cruisers should be made to pay for any rescue in a situation that is not endangering human life.

We want to inspire boatowners to improve their seamanship so they are able to help themselves in an emergency and, in doing so, help others on the water.

So, absorb what is useful. Reject what is of less use. Then add what is essentially your own
