When he decided to pen his first cookbook, Murats first thought for promotion was, Lance, Im going to call the Turkish embassy. And my first thought went, Yeah, of course. Granted, I seldom hesitate when faced with large, daunting projects or proposals in general. But I also didnt hesitate because Murats cooking is just that good. Once or twice a year, my bride Tara and I lead a group of students through NYC. One of the events includes a food tour.

In seven years of doing this, we have taken out of town guests to get fried cod and hundred-dollar-a-plate Korean barbecue, Asian fusion and expensive French cuisine, taco trucks and dollar dumplings. No matter the price, no matter the culture, no matter the preferred neighborhood or palate, almost every single visitor has preferred Murats cooking. So, yes. Of course. Lets call the United Nations. The mans diligent in his craft: let him stand before kings.

We have the benefit of living above Murats restaurant: his cuisine filled our bellies when we only had suitcases and an air mattress, our father a month away from bringing us our furniture. So we eat Murats cooking as often as budget allows. However, now you can do one better: you can have Murat in your home. This book will teach you the arcane secrets of his mastery. Magic. Hes also, however, hilarious.

I tried and tried to get him to pose for the front cover wearing nothing but an apron. The fact that he considered it, even for a moment, shows you the kind of joy he brings to his table. Riotous laughter echoes out of Kofte Piyaz on the regular and, just like the main character Remmy in my novel Bell Hammers, Murat has that good-old-boy prankster side that
