Preface
For over 30 years, I have been a University of California (UC), Davis, California State-Wide Pomology Postharvest Specialist in charge of fresh fruit and nuts. Prior to that, in the early 1980s, I was an Assistant Pomology Professor at the Universidad Catlica de Chile, working with deciduous fruit. Then, for less than 2 years, as a postdoc I investigated tropical fruit postharvest physiology, including coffee and sugarcane, at the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association (Oahu and Kauai).
In my current position at UC Davis that I started in 1990, the focus of my research and extension programs is postharvest biology and technology of peaches, nectarines, plums, and apricots (stone fruit). The main objective of my research program is to better understand the orchard and postharvest factors that control fruit flavor and postharvest life and to develop and implement technologies to overcome fruit industry problems. Currently, I am applying genomic techniques to identify gene(s) responsible for fruit sensory attributes (both desirable and undesirable) and investigating physiological disorders such as chilling injury, tissue browning and off-flavors.
In the early 1990s, I added additional crops to my areas of interest: table grapes, kiwifruits, persimmons, fresh figs, pomegranates and nuts. I was living in the San Joaquin Valley and my stone fruit clientele also grew, packed and marketed these commodities. I enjoyed interacting with industry people and especially with my peers: UC Pomology Specialist Mr. F. Gordon Mitchell, University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Kern County farm advisor Mr. Don Luvisi, and UCCE Tulare County farm advisor Mr. Kevin R. Day, Professor DeJong, and Themis Michailides. Some of these Mediterranean tree fruits are relatively minor crops in California with limited support, but are very important in other countries, which dedicate intensive economic resources to solving their postharvest problems. It can be difficult to access information on some of these Mediterranean tree fruits. The information may not be available, not distributed or is in other languages and most results of new research studies have not been made public.
