Family comforts
Comfort food to me is the embodiment of home. That warm, cozy feeling you get when you are in a familiar environment, surrounded by the people you love, eating food that makes you feel happy.
In this book, you will find my tried-and-tested wholesome family recipes, which fill me and my family with joy and happiness. When feeding a large (or even a little) crowd, you want to choose recipes that are guaranteed to go down well, so youve come to the right place. Pick from easy breakfasts or tasty family brunches, super simple and easy recipes that can be ready in no time, to family meals that really bring everyone around the table.
I love to use my slow cooker to make my life a little easier, by quickly prepping the base of the dish in the morning and letting it simmer away all day long, filling my house with inviting smells while I look forward to eating later. And lets not forget the puds! My Nina and I have such a sweet tooth so I like to create recipes that are naturally low in sugar, then I can have an extra slice or two!
I have developed every recipe to be suitable for the whole family, from grandma and grandpa coming around for Sunday dinner, to your newly weaning baby at 6 months of age. Every recipe can be enjoyed together, which not only helps your little ones become confident foodies, but it makes our lives just that little bit easier win, win, win!
Why eat together?
Growing up, we always ate around the table together with my mother and siblings, all talking and enjoying food with one another. However, it wasnt until I had my daughter Nina, three years ago, that I realised why this is so beneficial. Not only does it save you time by cooking just once, it helps to ensure that every member of your family, including you, has the opportunity to sit down and enjoy a good meal together.
But most importantly, it helps teach our children the physicalities of actually eating, chewing and developing cutlery skills, and contributing to forming positive attitudes towards food and nutrition as they grow older. Offering a wide variety of tastes and textures, while eating together to show your little ones how much youre enjoying the meal, helps children to grow older with reduced tendencies of being fussy with their food. Theyre watching you, learning from how you eat, and how happy and positive the meal experience is for you this makes our little ones want to join in and model our behaviours.
And finally, sitting around the dinner table prompts conversation not only with your older children but with the little ones too. Its a fantastic opportunity to help children develop their speech and communication skills. It truly is my most favourite part of the day, so I hope you enjoy these meals with your family just as much as I do.
Adapting the recipes to suit your diet
If you have specific dietary requirements, whether dairy-free, gluten-free, egg-free, vegan or vegetarian, there are ways to adapt the recipes in this book to suit your familys needs. Look out for the * symbol next to the ingredients in the recipes to see which ones you can substitute. Here, I have listed some foods that you can use as substitutes unless it is specifically stated in the recipe, choose whichever one works best for you. And always check product packets for hidden ingredients you may not be aware of.
Dairy-free cooking
Butter For most recipes, you can replace butter with dairy-free spreads (these are better for baking), or with coconut or olive oil.
