Chapter 1: Getting Started
What Is Decluttering?
Having a neat and orderly house might seem like one of those things that are nice, but that isnt vital to a happy, healthy lifestyle. This, however, could not be further from the truth. Research shows that having a dirty or cluttered home can actually have considerable negative effects on the mental and physical health of the inhabitants of the space.
Sometimes, it can be difficult to discern the effects our clutter is having on us when were in the middle of it. Sometimes, its not until the clutter is gone that we feel that weight lift off our shoulders, so to speak.
Its sort of like when youre in the house with the dryer running in the next room. Its not until the dryer turns off that you really realize how loud the dryer was, and how much better it feels not to have it running in the background, drowning out all the more subtle noise in the house.
It turns out that having a home or a living space that is overly filled with needless clutter can lead to a depletion of your resources like spare time, extra space, energy, and even your sense of peace. If every surface in your home is occupied by things that you dont particularly need, or by things that arent currently in use, you will find that you are less likely to bring in more things that could serve better use.
If your home is cluttered, you will need to spend a little extra time putting groceries away, putting new clothes away, doing laundry, or even dusting because that clutter has presented so many obstacles for even the simplest of tasks. Youll have to add actions to everything you do in order to work around that clutter, and you may not even realize that youre doing it since clutter is something that builds up over time.
Having too many things in your house can cause more stress than you may have realized, and it can lead to tension within the home. If one person thinks that another person in the home is largely responsible for the clutter, this can lead to blame and arguments. If someone is keeping another person in the home from cleaning things up and making the space more livable, this could lead to a toxic relationship of sorts and can skyrocket stress and pressure within the home.
ITS IMPORTANT, IN your home, to have space where you can relax after a long day. Its important to be able to decompress and let go of the stress that has built up over the course of the day or the week. Such things are nearly impossible in a space that is completely overtaken by clutter. This is another aspect of what makes decluttering so important.
Some houses are more cluttered than others, to be certain. However, this doesnt mean that the average household isnt completely saddled with hundreds of pounds of things that arent needed such as old clothing, books, boxes that havent been gone through in the past two home moves, toys that no longer see any playtime, and so much more.
Most homes have one drawer or closet that they simply dont open as a general rule thanks to its clutter. Wouldnt you rather have that space to use for things like the broom, spare batteries, or anything else that youd like to be able to find when you need it? Wouldnt you rather hat you werent embarrassed by that one drawer or closet every time your in-laws came over? Wouldnt you rather be able to store things that you need to store, without being concerned about whether or not you have space for it? Such are some of the benefits of keeping your home decluttered.
