Introduction

In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

All praise is due to Allah, to whom belongs the heavens and the earth and all that exists between them. I bear witness that there is no God except Allah and Muhammad is His Prophet and Messenger. He whom Allah guides is the rightly guided and Him Whom He leaves to stray you will not find for Him any guide.

This book is an extensive expository on the 99 Names of Allah. It is a valuable resource for understanding the infinite nature of God, and for discovering the divine disposition of every soul. The author explores the meaning of each of these divine names, their related descriptions from the Quran, their connection with the cosmos and their spiritual significance to the soul of man.

In the process of this discovery, the reader is exposed to the universal resonance encoded in the Quran and the traditions of the Prophet [i.e. Sunnah], as well as to a modern psychological approach that employs the 99 Names to understand who Allah is and achieve spiritual wholeness.

He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed. He is the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him. He is Allah, the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. [Surah al-Hashr, 22-24]

May Allah accept our efforts and to make this book a means of reviving the glory of His religion. And to include them on our Scale of good deeds on the Day of Judgement (Ameen).

Was Salamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah!

Importance of Learning About the Names of Allah

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, Allah has ninety-nine names and whoever preserves them will enter Paradise.

Simply put, the knowledge of Allah and His attributes is paramount in attaining success in this life and the Hereafter. The First pillar of Islam is the testimony of faith, which is based upon the knowledge of Allah and the way to knowing Allah is through His Names and Attributes.

Ibn Al-Qayyim said, Knowledge of the Most Beautiful Names of ALLAH is the basis of all other kinds of knowledge.

Tawhid revolves around knowing Allah and then worshipping Him. Hence, the knowledge of the Names of Allah and His attributes is the half of Tawhid and the other half is worshipping Him. Therefore, we have to know who Allah is and then we can fulfill the right of worshipping Him alone.

Hence, there is no knowledge more sacred than knowing who Allah is, the Sustainer of existence.

And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names. They will be recompensed for what they have been doing. [Surah Al-Araf, 180]

Allah affirms this in several places in the Quran, where He commands us to learn and know who He is:

..then know that Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise. [Surah Baqarah, 209]

..fear Allah and know that Allah is Knowing of all things. [Surah Baqarah, 231]

..And know that Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing. [Surah Baqarah, 235]

..And know that Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise. [Surah Baqarah, 260]

..And know that Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. [Surah Al-Maeda, 34]

..and know that Allah is severe in penalty. [Surah Al-Anfal, 25]

Because Allah wants us to know who He is. How can we expect to worship Him, if we dont know who He is? How will we love Him, if we dont know who He is? How will we fear Him, if we dont know who He is? How will we put our trust in Him or develop certain faith in Him, if we dont have knowledge of Him?

That is why knowledge of Allah is the central tenant of our Iman and Tawheed. There is no science that causes our iman to increase as much as the knowledge of Allah.

Shaykh Abd al-Rahmaan ibn Saadi (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

Believing in and knowing the Most Beautiful Names of Allah includes the three types of Tawheed:

Tawheed al-Ruboobiyyah (Oneness of Allahs Lordship),

Tawheed al-Uloohiyyah (Oneness of Worship) and

Tawheed al-Asma wal-Sifaat (Oneness of Allahs Names and Attributes).

There is nothing of this names and attributes except that a knowledge of it will tremendously increase our love of Allah.

He is Allah, the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise . [Surah Al-Hashr, 24]

ALLA H
The God

Allah is the Arabic word for God. The word is derived by contraction from al-ilah, which means the god. It is Al-ism al-azam, the greatest name which contains the divine attributes and is the sign of the essence of the absolute, all-powerful and all-knowing ruler of the universe, and the creator of everything in existence.

AR-RAHMAN
The Beneficent

Allah is the One given to quintessential acts of kindness. The Highest Lord, who sustains all that exist. He whose essence is beneficence and for that reason He created the heavens and the earth along with multitudes of creatures therein and provided them with good things.

It is Allah who made for you the earth a place of settlement and the sky a structure [i.e., ceiling] and formed you and perfected your forms and provided you with good things. That is Allah, your Lord; then blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds. [Surah Ghafir, 64]

He who created the heavens and the earth in six days and then established Himself above throne.

Indeed, your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He covers the night with the day, [another night] chasing it rapidly; and [He created] the sun, the moon, and the stars, subjected by His command. Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds. [Surah al-Araf, 54]

He who shows us His signs and sends us provisions from the sky.

It is He who shows you His signs and sends down to you from the sky, provision. But none will remember except he who turns back [in repentance]. [Surah Ghafir, 13]
