Practical Guide to Celestial Navigation, The: Step-by-step instructions for when youve lost the plot: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Practical Guide to Celestial Navigation, The: Step-by-step instructions for when youve lost the plot" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

The jargon-free guide to celestial navigation - know what to do step by step, understand why youre doing it, and be confident that you can put it into practice when on board.
Did you know that a person standing on the equator is effectively travelling at 900mph? And did you know that you can use this information to work out where you are in the world, to an accuracy of about miles? No GPS, no computers. Just a sextant, some tables from an Almanac and the knowledge in this book.
Its the only back up if the GPS goes down, so its a matter of safety. So if you want to qualify as a commercial skipper/superyacht captain you need to know how to carry out celestial navigation. And if you want to pass the RYA Ocean Yachtmaster exam, you need to know it too. Its a major stumbling block for many sailors wanting or needing to take their next qualifications, and the other books on the market are complex and often assume some prior understanding. This book fulfils the need for a jargon-free explanation of celestial navigation, illustrated with colour diagrams and including unique checklist sheets to enable you to repeat all those calculations you learned back at home, when youre on deck.
Without overwhelming the reader with a load of theory from the off, the author breaks down what you need to do, step by step, explaining why at every point giving the information context, and making it more interesting and memorable. He has trained students in this subject for years, and here hes able to use his experiences of what works, and what are the common pitfalls he even includes a What went wrong? chapter near the end, going through errors commonly made, and how to spot them. The objective is that readers will finish the book not only knowing what to do, but really understanding why, and being able to make sense of it all again later (rather than just getting through and exam and finding themselves at a loss when on deck). The author also includes time-tested proformas quick reference sheets that sailors can refer to when they come to putting the theory into practice on board, avoiding the terrifying cold start that most sailors experience when they suddenly need to put theory into practice.

Originally from Derby at the age of seven Phil Somerville was bought a model - photo 5

Originally from Derby, at the age of seven, Phil Somerville was bought a model sailing yacht by his grandfather. Even now, many decades later, the years have not faded the memory of that afternoon when the two of them took this small yacht down to a local boating lake together. It ignited a world of imagination and wonderment that has lasted a lifetime.

Phil went on to train and become a qualified marine electrical and electronics engineer. However, it wasnt long before the call of the sea became too strong to resist.

That was the start of an almost perpetual train of studies that has led Phil to become an RYA Yachtmaster Instructor and Examiner in both Power and Sail, and holder of an MCA Master 200gt unlimited certificate of competence.

Across Europe, Phil now teaches MCA Masters Celestial, RYA Ocean, MCA Masters Stability and the ten-day GMDSS communications course. As if thats not enough, he finds time to get involved in practical work opportunities wherever possible. This has led to a diverse range of experience over the years, from the construction of wind turbines in Germany to working aboard Skip Novaks Pelagic Australis in the Southern Hemisphere.

I remember only too well wrestling with the fundamentals of celestial - photo 8

I remember only too well wrestling with the fundamentals of celestial navigation. Im not stupid, I thought, Im reasonably well educated, why is this so difficult?

I spent months wading through book after book, trying to grasp the principles that made it work. Sure, I could go through the motions and come up with a position, but it was all done mechanically and without a grasp of how it really worked.

Then, one evening, parked up in the mountains of southern Spain, I had the eureka moment. The relief and excitement I felt that evening was beyond words.

Thankfully, that was a long time ago and I now have years of teaching the subject to RYA Ocean and MCA Master students behind me. Over the years Ive used my learning experience to dissect the subject and deliver it in proven, logical building blocks of understanding. Learning this timeless skill is not going to be a walk in the park and you should be prepared to put in some graft. The book will do the rest.

A BIT OF HISTORY

Before we talk further about the book, lets look at a bit of history.

Prior to a few centuries ago, there was no way of accurately fixing position at sea. The mariners of old could obtain their latitude fairly easily (youll discover how later on), but longitude was difficult. In fact, those mariners of old used dead reckoning (speed, direction and time), but this was less than ideal.

Then an event changed things for ever Possibly the most pivotal of all British - photo 9

Then an event changed things for ever. Possibly the most pivotal of all British maritime disasters occurred in 1707. Sir Cloudesley Shovell was returning his fleet of 21 ships to the British Isles from a campaign in the Mediterranean. I wont go into much detail, but the lack of accurate position fixing led to four ships running aground in the Isles of Scilly, and the loss of between 1,400 and 2,000 men.
