Techniques AND References

Backwards Loop Cast-On

Make a twisted (e-wrap) loop with the working yarn and place on the needle.

Cable Cast-On

*Insert needle between the first 2 sts on the left-hand needle, pull the yarn through to form a st, then place the new st on the left-hand needle; rep from * until the desired number of sts have been cast on.

German Short Rows

Create a double stitch (abbreviated as DS) at the turn point: once the last stitch of the previous row is worked, turn the work. Bring the working yarn to the front and slip that just-worked stitch purlwise onto the right-hand needle. Tug on the working yarn, bringing it up and over the needle, around the back, so that the just-worked stitch is pulled up tight, and two strands are sitting on the needle. If youre going to knit the next stitch, leave the yarn at the back, keeping the tension, and work back in pattern. If youre going to purl the next stitch, bring it around the needle to the front, as if for a yarnover, maintaining the tension.

This creates what look like doubled stitches, stitches with two legs up on the needle. When you encounter one of these on a subsequent row, just work into it as normal, catching the two strands.

I-Cord Bind-Off

Using your preferred method, CO 3 sts at the start of the row.

Row 1 (RS): K2, ssk, turn. Return these 2 sts back onto the left-hand needle and repeat the row, pulling the yarn tight across the back to make an I-cord.

Cut the yarn, leaving a tail of about four times the width of the seam to be joined. Hold the needles parallel, with the work hanging downas if for a three-needle bind-off, with the WS together, and the RS of the front piece facing you.

With the yarn tail threaded onto a yarn needle, work as follows:

The Setup

Front needle: Thread the needle through the first stitch purlwise, and pull the yarn through.

Back needle: Thread the needle through the first stitch knitwise, and pull the yarn through.

The Repeat

Front needle: Thread the needle through the first stitch knitwise, slip the stitch off, pull the yarn through. Thread the needle through the next stitch purlwise, leave the stitch on the needle, pull the yarn through.

Back needle: Thread the needle through the first stitch purlwise, slip the stitch off, pull the yarn through. Thread the needle through the next stitch knitwise, leave the stitch on the needle, pull the yarn through.

The Last Step

Front needle: Thread the needle through the last stitch knitwise, slip the stitch off, pull the yarn through.

Back needle: Thread the needle through the last stitch purlwise, slip the stitch off, pull the yarn through.

Modified Icelandic Bind-Off

strandsoflife.com/modified-icelandic-bind-off

Provisional Cast-On

With waste yarn, make a slip knot and place it on a crochet hook. Bring the knitting needle to the left of your crochet hook, with the yarn from the skein underneath the needle. Take the crochet hook over the needle and hook the yarn, bringing it back over the needle and through the loop onto the crochet hook. Move the yarn from the skein back underneath the needle and repeat this process until the desired number of stitches have been cast on.
