A History of Maritime Trade in Northern Vietnam, 12th to 18th Centuries: Archaeological Investigations in Vandon and Phohien: summary, description and annotation

This book analyzes the role of i Vit (Vietnam) in the maritime Asian trading network of the thirteenth through the eighteenth centuries as it systematically integrates the results of archaeological investigations.

The first half of the book consolidates reports from excavations conducted at Vn n and Ph Hin, trading ports of i Vit, incorporating sophisticated archaeological techniques distinctive of Japan in the presentations of the data. These are accompanied by precise scale drawings, detailed classifications, and quantitative analyses of unearthed artifacts.

The latter half of the book discusses the materials discovered in archaeological investigations, specifically ceramics and coins, in terms of the relations among sites and networks of production, distribution, and consumption, from a broader Asian geohistorical perspective. To this end, the diplomatic policies and trading activities of each era in Vietnam are discussed, integrating the results of archaeological investigations with studies of historical documents.

Expanding beyond Vietnam, results of the archaeological investigations in other maritime Asian countries, such as Japan, Indonesia, Laos, and the Philippines, are introduced, to inform a comparative study that combines all such data from both archaeology and history in a single volume as materials for broader discussion. This book is expected to contribute to international academic discourse on the history of maritime Asia and help open a new phase of scholarly endeavor in this field.

Aims and Scope

This series from Springer provides a platform for works in economic history that truly integrate economics and history. Books on a wide range of related topics are welcomed and encouraged, including those in macro-economic history, financial history, labor history, industrial history, agricultural history, the history of institutions and organizations, spatial economic history, law and economic history, political economic history, historical demography, and environmental history.

Economic history studies have greatly developed over the past several decades through application of economics and econometrics. Particularly in recent years, a variety of new economic theories and sophisticated econometric techniquesincluding game theory, spatial economics, and generalized method of moment (GMM)have been introduced for the great benefit of economic historians and the research community.

At the same time, a good economic history study should contribute more than just an application of economics and econometrics to past data. It raises novel research questions, proposes a new view of history, and/or provides rich documentation. This series is intended to integrate data analysis, close examination of archival works, and application of theoretical frameworks to offer new insights and even provide opportunities to rethink theories.

The purview of this new Springer series is truly global, encompassing all nations and areas of the world as well as all eras from ancient times to the present. The editorial board, who are internationally renowned leaders among economic historians, carefully evaluate and judge each manuscript, referring to reports from expert reviewers. The series publishes contributions by university professors and others well established in the academic community, as well as work deemed to be of equivalent merit.

All books and chapters in the Studies in Economic History book series are indexed in Scopus.

Preface

This book is a translation of my Japanese volume, Betonamu hokubu ni okeru boekiko no kokogaku kenkyu: Van Don to Fo Hien o chushin ni [Archaeological research on trade ports in Northern Vietnam: focusing on Vn n and Ph Hin] (2017, Tokyo: Yuzankaku), which was based on my doctoral dissertation submitted in 2014 to the Department of Area Studies, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, University of Tokyo, Japan.

This book is a compilation of the results of my research at the time of 2014. The following prior publications were drawn upon as noted below, but as there have been significant improvements to the contents in the course of preparing this volume, I ask that for the future the current work be taken as a reference. In addition, it should be noted that I changed my name from Abe Yuriko to Kikuchi Yuriko due to marriage. Therefore, my works before 2014 are written under the name Abe Yuriko.

Recently, maritime Asian trading is a popular topic for scholars and researchers in Asian countries including Japan. Their studies are, however, mainly based on historical documents. Archaeological remains are seldom focused on as the main body of discussion, and even if mentioned, they are presented as examples at best.

In this book, the history of the production of the Vietnamese ceramics exported overseas and the history of trading in Maritime Asia are connected by the results of the archaeological investigations at trading ports, and the stages of production, distribution and consumption of the traded goods, which used to be separately studied in Vietnamese archaeology, are discussed interrelating them mediated by ports. This method is a pioneer in global history, and hence, the integration of the results, that is this book, is of a great academic value.
