Introduction
T hank you for buying this book, and please let me be the first to congratulate you: youve just cracked open a world of knowledge that is going to make you rich, famous, and possibly the owner of that tiger that once played the part of Mike Tysons tiger in the movie, The Hangover.
Just kidding. That tiger is totally not for sale. Ive checked.
But if you have bought this book because you enjoy digging deeper into familiar places, getting to know travelers from all over the world, and telling the stories of people who have made your city great, youre in the right place.
When I decided to quit my desk job (in a tiny cubicle in a windowless office in Times Square) five years ago to lead unsuspecting tourists around a city I had moved to only six months before, I was worried that aliens might have removed my brain and replaced it with one of a slightly more adventurousyet albeit crazyperson.
I had no idea that I would spend the next six months totally broke, constantly stressed, and worried Id never be able to afford my rent.
I also had no idea that I would find a career that would allow me more freedom than Id ever enjoyed in any other job. That I would get over the shyness that had held me back for most of my life. That Id exude more self-confidence than I ever had before.
Or, that I would form long-lasting relationships and friendships with fellow tour guides and travelers, giving me the confidence to travel the world solo and make connections that would help me navigate other cities.
Plus, I was able to carve out a livingenough money to afford an apartment in Brooklyn, travel to other cities, and even go out to eat a few nights a week. Andget ready for it wine . Im not talkin two buck chuck people. Decent, more-than-$10-a-bottle wine.
Which, as any New Yorker knows, is a complete win.
Hopefully this book will give you the tools to start your own journey as a tour guide. Will you become rich and famous from tour guiding?
Maybe, but probably not.
Will you learn a valuable skill that youll be able to harness in nearly every corner of the world? Will you be able to work only a few hours per day, allowing you to free up your schedule for passion projects, school, and downtime?
Thats the goal.
Ill also share with you some of the biggest mistakes I made when I was starting out, so hopefully you can avoid the six months of worry and anxiety that I experienced as a novice.
Youll discover what types of jobs are available to tour guides, what type of training and licensing you need,, and what special skills you need to succeed.
The perfect tour isnt easy to create, but Im going to give you some tidbits of knowledge that should help you get started on creating solid tours that sell.
Im going to detail how to get your first job as a guide, find other avenues of income, and how to start your own tour company (if you happen to be so crazy brave to do so).
Youll find out how to offer your guests five-star customer service, so they turn into repeat guests and recommend your company to everyone they know.
Ill also provide some information on the nuts and bolts of becoming a tour guide and starting your own tour guiding business to help ease some of the stress and worry that inevitably comes from working for yourself.
Speaking of working for yourself, Ive also included some resources on dealing with the isolation of freelancing and finding your co-worker community.
Finally, Ill leave you with several more lists of resources at the end of each chapter that include information I wish I had when I first started out. Youll also have my email address, so you can ask me any questions along the way! Bonus!
Over the years, Ive met so many people who want to become tour guides and to travel the world on their termsbut havent known where to start.
At the very least, this book should be able to give you the confidence and support you need to get your foot in the door. Ultimately, I hope it inspires you to find your niche and passion within your own nook of the tour guiding world.
Who Should Become a Tour Guide?
Most people know deep down within themselves whether or not they would make a great tour guide. Even people who dont fit the below qualifications can find a small piece of the market that will fit their personalities.
For example, people who are afraid of public speaking could start out offering private tours for small groups and increase the number of guests at their comfort levels. If you want to get out of your comfort zone and try something new, theres not a lot of risk in becoming a tour guide.
Theres no massive monetary commitment, so you wont need to take out a second mortgage on your home if you just want to test the waters.
Many of the successful tour guides I know share similar traits:
  • A desire to work with the public
  • The ability to speak in front of groups of five or more people
  • A passion to educate others on a variety of subjects relating to a city, town, or region
  • An interest in different cultures
  • A love for history and/or current events
  • A funny, quirky, or bubbly personality
  • The ability to answer plenty of questions and moderate discussions
  • The flexibility to handle various personalities, including frustrated guests
  • A decent sense of direction (or at least the skills to find your way around)
  • A sense of empathy for the needs of others
  • A loud voice (or at the very least, a microphone)
People with experience with the following professions make great tour guides:
  • Comedians
  • Actors
  • Teachers
  • Presenters
  • Civil servants
Does that mean that people with no experience with these professions will fail miserably and end up in a ditch if they become tour guides? No!
But people with this experience already know most of what they need to know to be a successful tour guide. You can definitely learn these skills as you go. Rome wasnt built in a day. It took God like seven days to create the earth. It took Angelina Jolie like nine years to tie the knot with Brad Pitt. Brad freakin Pitt!
