When I was 19, my mom died in my arms after a yearlong battle with lung cancer. She was 47. I remember the day of her memorial service in our backyard: the awkwardness of people not knowing what to say, the pit in my stomach whenever I touched the reality that she was really gone, the look of devastation on peoples faces when they saw me. But what I remember most of all is what I overheard people saying about my mother. They spoke about what a caring and dynamic person she was, always so full of life and the first one to raise her hand to volunteer or help an important cause. And right on the heels of that, they slipped in their thoughts about how well she could have done had she left her job and started her own business.

My mom had worked full-time for a big aerospace company, designing the many forms they needed on her drafting table (this was in the days before desktop computing and graphic design software). She always had some kind of side hustle, whether it was helping small businesses with their design needs or selling stuffed animals to her coworkers and then donating the money to a local shelter for domestic abuse survivors. As they recalled my moms efforts, her friends said that if only she had taken a chance a little sooner, had more confidence, and realized how special she was, she could have used her gifts to do even more in the world.
