In writing this book I have attempted, first of all, to give an account of the various forms of education in Israel, their present organization and curricula. It is difficult for a single person to cover so wide a canvas, but, with the help of colleagues, I have tried to ascertain the main facts and to present them as objectively as possible.
At the same time, a static photograph would be a completely inadequate description of Israel, even as it is today. For Israel is an unfolding drama, in education above all, with its roots in the distant past, and reaching out towards a new way of life in a rapidly developing world; and it is essentially a country of immigrants who, in a short span of time, have had to live through this development.
No account of Israel, then, can be sufficient which does not give some idea of this motion. This requires a feeling for the past, an understanding of present-day problems, and an attempt to trace possible future lines of advance. Here it is more difficult to be objective; although I have tried to present the various views which are current, the reader must be on his guard. I believe, however, that, while there may be differences of opinion concerning the future, the statement of the problems is substantially correct.
The problems are, in a sense, more important than a photograph of the fleeting present; first, because they are by no means transient; secondly, because many of them arc not peculiar to Israel but are common to all modern states. Israel is, in education as in many other spheres, a microcosm. How to break down class barriers and give every child, as far as possible, an equal chance to develop his personality and his powers; how to maintain values in a pleasure-seeking world; how to build a new synthesis of religion and science, and create a new and better way of life in a technological societythese are world problems, and should be of interest, not only to persons concerned in Israel, but to educationists in general, and even to a wider public.
