This book is a point-of-care resource for effective sexual and reproductive healthcare for patients of all ages, sexual orientations, gender identities and medical backgrounds in the primary care setting. This useful guide is divided into three parts, and other than part three, which deals exclusively with transgender and gender diverse patients, all content will relate to patients of all gender identities.

Part one presents sexual and reproductive health (SRH) using a lifespan approach, including chapters on pediatrics, adolescents and young adults, adults, and older adult patients. Part two presents an approach to common SRH issues that span multiple age groups, including contraception and family planning, sexually transmitted infections and cancer screenings as well as sexual and reproductive health in the setting of common medical conditions. Part three is dedicated to sexual and reproductive health for transgender and gender non-binary patients, including psychosocial, medical, surgical and legal aspects of health.

This book provides primary care clinicians with a framework for providing effective sexual and reproductive healthcare to patients of all ages, sexual orientations and gender identities in a way that is inclusive, focuses on health, and addresses the needs unique to specific populations.

Preface

Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) is a critical aspect of the overall health and wellness of patients. Primary care clinicians are in a unique position to partner with patients to improve SRH. This book is designed to serve as a point-of-care resource for primary care clinicians at all levels of training and practice. It aims to present an approach to SRH that is inclusive of all ages, genders, sexual orientations, and physical abilities. At all times, our editors and authors strive to use inclusive, patient-centered language, even when available data and current guidelines may operate within gender-binary frameworks, exclude certain groups, or conflate sexual practices with sexual orientation and gender identity. We hope that the frameworks we present will help you apply the best available evidence and guidelines in an equitable, just, and patient-centered way to each and every patient you see.

This book is divided into three parts. Part I presents an approach to SRH across the lifespan, including pediatrics, adolescents and young adults, adults, and older adults. Part II presents more in-depth content on specific domains of SRH, and specific populations that may require additional knowledge. While Parts I and II are inclusive of all genders, we recognize that many resources, studies, and guidelines exclude transgender and gender non-binary (TGNB) patients, and many social and political structures marginalize individuals who do not identify within cis-gender male-female binary identities. For these reasons, Part III of this book is dedicated to SRH for TGNB patients, including physical health, mental health, and legal considerations regarding SRH.

As with all aspects of medicine, evidence and best practices evolve over time. While the screening, diagnostic, and treatment recommendations described in this book are current and up to date at the time of publication, we recommend clinicians directly reference the primary literature professional guidelines when making clinical decisions.
