The color of the ocean
is a blend of iron blue
and gray.
The hue of delicious meringue
is a blend of milky white and
snow white.
The historic buildings
of Yokohama are a blend
of aquamarine and khaki.
IN SEARCH OF COLORS
The seaside where I collect shells.
Yokohama walks in casual clothes.
That certain forest hike.
In a quiet room with the cats, watching the rise and fall
of their rounded stomachs as they breathe in sleep.
Felt with my eyes and ears and skin, gathered in my mind
and heartall the places, the colors and shapes,
the light and the scents.
As I combine and blend the embroidery threads, I gather the
colors and shapes from the drifting forms in my head.
Blue and white, and the evocative moments glimpsed
between the two colors;
How happy I am to share this beauty with you.

Morning.
I toss dry food into the cats bowl
Im inspired to embroider the shape of their food.
As I hang the laundry outside, I pluck some flowering plants from the yard to
decorate my room.
Perhaps Ill use the lemon from my garden as a motif for my next project.
I hope the lemons grow this year.
I boil water.
The form of the steam might make a cute embroidery design.
I pour a cup of tea. Today, its an extra-hot black tea. Yesterday, I think I had coffee.
I head to my desk.
I choose thread colors.
The blue and white threads make me crave the sea.
The shade of blue I saw on the tile of an old building in Yokohama,
thats the blue Im looking for.
I thread the needle.
Now its time to embroider.

Embroidery materials and tools
(a) Fabric
We recommend fabrics with a
tighter weave. Before embroidering,
soak the fabric in water for a few
hours, then press with an iron while
still damp to straighten the grain.
(b) Thread
In this book, we used these brands
of embroidery thread: DMC, cosmo,
Olympus and Appleton. Even if you
dont have the same thread colors that
are featured in the book, feel free to
create your own colors by combining
various threads you have on hand.
(c) Tracing kit
Tracing paper, craft carbon transfer
paper, cellophane, tracing tool,

paperweight. For the craft carbon transfer
paper, try to find the water-soluble type.
The gray color tends to be the most
inconspicuous in cases where the markings
dont fully disappear. Make sure to use a flat
surface like a cutting mat for tracing designs.
(d) Pincushion
Having multiple pincushions to separate
needles of different thicknesses is
helpful. You could even make your own
pincushions!
(e) (f) Scissors
Small thread-cutting scissors should have
pointy tips and extra sharp blades. For
cutting fabric, its handy to have a larger
pair of scissors as well as a small pair. A
small pair of fabric scissors is useful for
constructing little projects.
(g) Writing utensils
Tools for transferring the design onto the
tracing paper include mechanical pencils,
pens, pen-style eraser, ruler. To mark
fabrics, use a water-soluble marking pen.
When the design lines start to fade on the
fabric, you can always re-draw them with
the marking pen.
(h) Embroidery hoop
The easiest to use is typically about 4-6
inches (10-15 cm) in diameter. Wrap a
piece of fabric around the inner hoop to
cushion the fabric that will be embroidered.
The wrapped inner hoop provides extra
hold and prevents slippage of the fabric
that will be embroidered.
Place in this order from
bottom up: cutting board,
fabric, craft carbon transfer
paper, tracing paper with
transferred design, cellophane.
Secure the layers in place with
a paperweight. As you trace
the design, keep the desired
composition and where the
embroidery hoop will be
positioned.
