Introduction
Witches have captured our imaginations for hundreds of years as wildly varying archetypes of healers, monsters, empowered feminists, evildoers, chosen ones, and mystics. Being able to span such a contradictory spectrum of morality proves just how powerful the archetype of the witch really is, even if we cant seem to nail down one solid definition or character. The witchs prevalence also hints at how accessible the power of the witch is to all of us, even if we cant quite figure out how to approach it.
For the purpose of this book, I describe witches as those who have a special connection to the elements of nature and choose to harness the elements powers and energies to understand the world and to create change. Witches are elemental philosophers with a scientists curiosity to understand and then apply. Although there are many different types of witches who focus on certain elements, practices, or deities, their goaltransformationis the same. Witches can have a solitary practice or practice with a group, often called a coven. There are many intricate hierarchies and training groups for witchcraft, but you dont need to be in a formal coven to use the tenets of witchcraft to improve your life and create peace and wellness. Wherever youre starting from is the perfect place to start.
The one thing that most people can agree on when it comes to the witch archetype is that the witch uses magick. How people perceive magick is often how they define what a witch is, and this is where some can get really hung up on concern or fear. I would ask that if you feel any resistance or fear of magick, keep an open mind to what Im about to tell you: magick may not be what you think it is.
Magick is a far more intimate and imaginative art than simply conjuring spells or calling upon spirits. More than anything else, the practice of ritual is a psychological practice, similar to meditation, prayer, poetry, or therapy. Ritual encourages you to reflect on your feelings and creatively make physical symbols of those internal feelings and experiences, thus connecting whats inside of you to whats outside of you in the world. This not only integrates your inner and outer worlds but it also creates a deeper understanding of your purpose and place in the world as both a spiritual being and a physical being. Its the basis of the magickal phrases As above, so below and As within, so without.
Magick is metaphor made real. Its feeling our sadness as water and pouring a chalice into the earth to represent the grounding of our feelings into stability. Its the realization that if we lack passion, we can light a candle and work with the flame to reignite our hearts. Its a practice of imagination, creativity, and spirit. Magick allows us to tell stories, even in very small ways, that connect us to our bodies and our internal worlds. By creating symbols of our feelings and experiences in our internal worlds and bringing them into the physical world through ritual, we bring those metaphors to life. We create magick. We shift the way we interact with the world, and in turn, the way the world interacts with us.
