Foreword
I REMEMBER STANDING in line with my mother and grandmother outside a church where the government was giving away blocks of cheese to families who qualified for assistance. As I stood in line, I carefully inspected the other kids in line, hoping they didnt go to my elementary school. I didnt want people to know how poor we were. I was embarrassed and, if Im honest, a little ashamed. Many of my friends were wealthy. At least to me, they were wealthy. Their parents had two cars. They had a garage. Their house had stairs and a second floor with an extra bedroom for guests. These things, to me, were great luxuries.
My mother worked hard. She was a secretary at an oil refinery. Shed dropped out of college to marry my father, who dropped out of the marriage a few years laternot long after I was born. My mother was frugal with money. She subscribed to a newsletter that taught her how to save money. Instead of buying paper towels, we saved the extra napkins we got when we bought fast food. We used powdered milk instead of real milk because it was half the price.
If you were to pause my story right there, right when I was in junior high adding powdered milk to my cereal, youd likely fill in the rest of the story revealing how I grew up to become poor myself, how I didnt go to college and got a job digging ditches and started drinking and got a woman pregnant and so on and so on.
