After Campus Sexual Assault: A Guide for Parents: summary, description and annotation

The only comprehensive resource for families dealing with campus sexual assault.

Mom, theres something I need to tell you is just the beginning. After Campus Sexual Assault: A Guide For Parents addresses how, when, and why students tell their parents about having been sexually assaulted. Giving and getting the news can be messy. Although parents often are stunned by the news, its important to provide stability and safety at this vulnerable time.

Based on years of research and scores of quotes from students, mothers, fathers, and campus service providers, this book sheds light on campus culture today, the range of actions that comprise campus sexual assault, and the many impacts on victims and their families. Importantly, this book offers compassionate guidance for navigating the often-tumultuous time that follows an assault.

Although colleges and universities have developed resources for students who have been sexually assaulted, parents are largely left to fend for themselves. Whether through their own sense of stigma, wanting to protect their childs privacy, or other reasons, parents rarely turn to others for support. This experience can be stressful and isolating.

By understanding the impacts of campus sexual assault and learning from others who have been through the trauma and its aftermath, together, parents and children can develop strategies for healing and growth.

Susan B. Sorenson, PhD, professor at the University of Pennsylvania, is a public health researcher and clinical psychologist. Her research, teaching, community work, advisory service, and legislative testimony focus on understanding and preventing violence.

I am grateful to the students, parents, and university staff members whose openness made this book possible. The trust they placed in me is a gift.

Preparation of the manuscript was a solitary, but not solo, endeavor. I extend my appreciation to the many people who helped in all sorts of ways, especially:

Bill Meyers, Sarah Ricks, Janice Asher, and Tanya Jain for their astute comments on drafts of the chapters. Their suggestions improved the work in ways big and small.

Joan Parker, Suzanne Staszak-Silva, Linda Carbone, Michael Wilde, and Erica Wassall, who helped make the idea of a book into reality.

Katherine Camabreri for her wonderful photographs.

The Ortner Center on Violence and Abuse at the University of Pennsylvania, whose support allowed me to take a one-semester break from teaching in order to write.

Kas, Lori Ann, Roberta, and Sarah. Each believed in this work from its inception and provided encouragement and support at times I needed it most.

Richard and Michael, for everything.
