This book is dedicated to my sister Lilibeth, my brother-in-law Brad, and my far better half, Kirby. As I wrote this book, all three began battling cancer. The strength that all three have shown has been beyond measure. To say that they have been inspiring would be an understatement.
This book is also dedicated to all those who battle cancer and their families who fight alongside their loved ones in their own way. Keep fighting the good fight.

Acknowledgments
I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to write this book but especially for the timing of it. This came at a period when I needed it most. As Kirby was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia during the shutdowns of the pandemic, the hospital visiting hours were limited. I would have spent every moment of the day at St. Vincent's Hospital if I were allowed, but COVID-19 precautions only permitted me to be there during more restricted visiting times. Working on this book gave my mind something to focus on when I was home alone, rather than thinking of terrible scenarios of all the things that could go wrong over the following months. Writing this book granted me a calm sea to sail where I could escape from the storms looming on the horizon, even if it were only for a few hours a day.
No one writes a book alone.
Writing this book has been made possible by the encouragement and assistance of many others. I owe my thanks to generous people for helping me along the way, a number of whom have also had a profound impact on me. Bradley Irvin has been a stabilizing force in many aspects of my life. I am thankful for the figures and graphs that he designed for this book. His formatting assistance and his organizational skills have been vital to me keeping my deadlines. But above of all of that, Brad's presence in my world allows me to remain compos mentis. Special thanks to Mason Dutch Yochum, who said that he would be there for me to help in any way in my home or in my life should I take on this project while managing the worries of Kirby's leukemia, my business responsibilities, and everyday life. I am thankful for Mason's help with transcriptions of the interviews in this book, and I am thankful as well for him being there to talk to on the days when news of setbacks would arrive from the team of doctors at the hospital.
Kristian Andersen has been my friend throughout a number of interesting stages of my life, and he is a busy man. I am grateful for him taking the time to write the foreword for this book and for being a confidant. Big gratitude to Brandi Andersen, who hopped into her van and was the very first person on the scene when word of Kirby's condition came around. She came to hug me and let me know that I was not alone. Knowing that you are not alone when isolated from others is a big part of this book. That loving act of Brandi's was a source of strength and hope. A huge thank you is given to my friends and compatriots in arts advocacy, Laura Glover and Mark Edgar Stephens, for their words of wisdom and expertise contained within this book. I am also thankful for them both being fountains of good information, generosity, and inspiration.
