H ave you ever wondered why two products which are used the same way tend to have different market strength or one has more sales than the other? For example between two detergents. Let us call them product z and product Y. Product Y has more sales and it all lies in how it is advertised. In their advertisement, the marketers of product z just tell consumers it s a liquid soap and it is also multipurpose while for product Y consumers are told much more including what stains it can remove and its reaction to their hands. The influencers or in this case marketers have used an emotion point to drive up their sales. They know that consumers tend to look at how a product will benefit them personally than what it comprises of and when this point is enhanced, the sales are higher.

In the following chapters we will learn how each of these methods can be used to manipulate. We can also use them to know whether we are being manipulated or even use them to our own advantage.

Psychological manipulation is influencing others in order to change their perception or behaviour. It can be done through deception, abuse or underhanded tactics. If the method used is at the expense of an individual, it can be considered to be deceptive, exploitative, devious or abusive. It can also be defined as exercising influence through exploiting emotionally or mental distortion. This is done so as to control, seize power, or get benefits and privileges at the expense of the victim.

However not all methods of psychological manipulation when used should result in a negative result. For example, a doctor may try to persuade a patient to change their habits which could be affecting their health. This manipulation is harmless as the person being influenced has a right to either reject or accept.

W henever your safety , interests and rights are at stake, it is important to recognize what the influencer is doing. This will give you an upper hand and you will be able to protect yourself or anyone under your care. The following techniques can be used to manipulate psychologically:

Familiar Ground

In order to be in control or dominate a situation, the manipulator will choose to meet in an area where they are most comfortable with. This maybe their home area, office or car. As a victim you will not have a sense of familiarity or ownership of the place and therefore you will easily agree to whatever they are proposing.

Giving the victim an opportunity to speak first

Through probing questions an influencer can evaluate your weak and strong points. In turn your way of reasoning and behavior will be well outlined for them to be able to manipulate you. This is a technique that is used by many sales people so that you can get a reason to buy their product. It can also occur in personal relationships or at our places of work.

Manipulating facts

Certain facts can be manipulated for example by exaggeration, withholding information that is key, heaping blame on the victim that they could have done better in a certain situation. Lying can also be used to manipulate and it may take a longtime if it ever happens for the victim to convince people otherwise. In the case of heaping blame on the victim, it can be very demoralizing especially if they are perfectionists. Sometimes victims tend to accommodate the manipulator because they do not have the energy to fight since so much damage has already been done.

Overwhelm with statistics and facts

If a manipulator knows you do not have facts in a certain field, they take advantage and show off and in so doing can easily and convincingly achieve their goals through you. It mostly happens in negotiations, financial situations, professional discussions and social arguments. The manipulator uses these facts to create a sense of being superior intellectually. It can also be called bullying intellectually.
