Chapter 1 Why are cover letters so important Dear Reader Why do some - photo 1
Chapter 1
Why are cover letters so important?

Dear Reader,

Why do some people almost always get the job they want?

Because their cover letter wins them an interview and 99 per cent dont !

As a professional CV and cover letter writer, every single day, I see which cover letters really achieve results. This puts me in a unique position , enabling me to bring you the very best of what I have learned, helping you to create the perfect cover letter.

Never underestimate a cover letters importance

According to a recent survey, cover letters are seen by almost 50 per cent of recruiters as being as important as a CV, although most people spend the least amount of time on them.

Many people lose out on an interview not because of their CV but because of their cover letter. People blame their CV without giving a thought to their cover letter, yet its frequently the cover letter that is to blame for the lack of success.

When someone has hundreds of CVs to plough through, the cover letter sets the tone of the application and should inspire the reader to turn over enthusiastically and read the accompanying CV.

It is the ideal opportunity for you to succinctly summarise and re-emphasise the skills and experiences you have highlighted in your CV, whilst also giving you greater latitude to express your personality. It can help to focus attention on your strengths and distract attention from any weaker points.

Get it wrong and you may find that the recruiter doesnt even bother to read your CV. Applications can be rejected solely on the basis of the cover letter.

Consequently, I would strongly recommend you take your time in preparing your cover letter to and maximise your chances of getting through to the interview stage.

What can this book do to help you?

Youre reading this book for one reason to find out what makes a perfect cover letter. Clearly, you already realise just how important a document your cover letter is and you recognise that getting it right can be tricky.

In The Cover Letter Book I aim to demonstrate exactly what you should and shouldnt do when writing your cover letters. I will help you to create cover letters that really work for you. This book condenses the same proven methodology I use every day with my clients and contains all the tips and dare I say it tricks that you need. I will cut through all the debate and opinion about cover letters and show you what really works from the recruiters point of view; what I have proved to work.

An apology in advance

It is impossible to write a book of this nature in such a way that all of the content will be perfectly suited to everyone. My readers range from manual workers to senior executives, to office staff and those who work in retail. Some will work in a team; some wont. Some will have a boss; some will be the boss.

Ive done my best to deliver a book which covers, as much as possible, all the different circumstances my readers might be in and all the different issues they might have to face. But there will inevitably be sections which dont apply to your own circumstances or where the focus is either above or below your level in the hierarchy. I can only apologise for this and hope youll be kind enough to forgive me. The answer is to take what you need and to leave the rest.
