Introduction

Making lotion from the start can be a bit tasking as there are many ingredients to choose. Creating your own DIY lotion from scratch can be confusing at first, but as you master the steps, it becomes simpler and much easier to do.

Once you have an idea of the basics, you can go ahead to formulate your own specially made lotion recipe. The wonderful thing about making a lotion is the flexibility to customize it to the texture you want.

First of all, the main thing to need to know about creating your own lotion is to have a grasp of the basic ingredients, which are water, oils, and emulsifiers. Lotion is prepared by mixing water and oils with an emulsifier. It can be confusing to know the adequate amount of water, oils, and emulsifiers that are needed to make a steady lotion.

The consistency of your lotion depends on the quantity of each ingredient and the type of oils and used. Ingredients like thickeners, glycerin, fragrance, and color can also be included as well.

The primary ingredient of a lotion recipe is water. A lotion product is usually made up of about 70-80% water. Adding more water gives a lighter and thinner lotion product. Oils and butters make up about 10-25% of the final product. Incorporating a larger percentage of oils and butters will usually give a thicker and heavier lotion product.

The type of oil and butter used also has a significant effect on the texture of the lotion. For example, using lightweight oil such as sweet almond oil gives lotion a very different texture unlike adding cocoa butter. You can prepare lotion with a variety of oils and butter and the ones you use depend on the texture and benefits you would like the lotion product to have.

Lastly, emulsifiers make up around 10% or less in a lotion. An emulsifier is very important in creating a stable lotion as it combines the water and oil together. The last thing you want in your lotion product is for the water and oil to form separate layers.

Homemade Lotion Recipes
Simple Calendula Lotion

Total Time: 30 minutes

Yields: 2 (4oz) cups

Ingredients

  • 1 cup calendula infused oil
  • 1oz (4 tablespoons) beeswax
  • 1 cup tepid water
  • Essential oils of your choice
  • Molds to hold 2 cups

Method

  1. Disinfect your tools by spritzing 99% rubbing alcohol on the surface and leaving them to air dry. Make sure you wear gloves throughout the mixing process to avoid contaminating the lotion.
  2. Prepare the calendula infused oil by soaking dried calendula flowers in olive oil for weeks, or heat the oil and dried flowers on low heat in a slow cooker for 24 hours.
  3. Next, bring several cups of water to a boil. Add about 2 cups of the hot water to a blender to preheat it. This will keep the lotion from sticking to the blender.
  4. Let the rest of the water simmer and make a double boiler by putting the infused oil and beeswax either in a glass measuring cup or in a heatproof bowl over the simmering water.
  5. Heat until the beeswax completely melts into the oil. Remove from heat and stir in the essential oils. Discard the hot water in your blender and put the emulsion mixture inside.
  6. Cover the blender and leave open the hole that is used for drizzling liquids in. Power on the blender and slowly drizzle the tepid water inside. It should give a creamy emulsification after this. You may need to scrape the sides of your blender once or twice to ensure all of the water is incorporated.
  7. If you have a stick/immersion blender or food processor, you can use either in place of the blender.
  8. Pour into prepared molds or containers and allow the lotion solidify for a couple of hours before use.

Note: The recipe contains water and lacks the preservatives added to store-bought lotions. It is quite perishable because it has a short shelf life of about a month, and should be stored in the refrigerator in-between uses.

Creamy Cucumber Lotion

Total Time: 1-2 hours

Yields: 4 (4oz) cups

Ingredients

  • 16oz basic lotion base
  • 2oz cucumber oak fragrance oil
  • 6oz cucumber extract
  • 1ml emerald labcolor or any coloring of choice
  • 1/2 teaspoon kermit green mica
  • 4 (4oz) jars with white twist cap

Method

  1. You need to mix the labcolor beforehand. To do this, dilute it in 4oz of distilled water in a bowl and set aside.
  2. Disinfect a clean spoon and heat proof bowl container by spritzing 99% rubbing alcohol on the surface and leaving them to air dry. Make sure you wear gloves throughout the mixing process to avoid contaminating the lotion.
  3. Spoon the basic lotion base into the disinfected container, and warm in the microwave in 10-second bursts, stirring between each heating interval. Exercise caution not to heat the lotion above 130F/54C or the preservative will become ineffective. The lotion should be slightly more liquid and pourable at around 115F -120F/46C-49C.
  4. Add the cucumber oak fragrance oil and the cucumber extract to the heated lotion base. Using a stick/immersion blender, emulsify the ingredients together. Mix for about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  5. Add the diluted emerald labcolor or coloring of choice to the lotion. Continue mixing until the color is well-mixed into the lotion.
  6. Add the kermit green mica, and blend until the mica is completely incorporated with no visible clumps. Continue to stick blend the lotion for another minute, just to ensure the lotion is completely emulsified.
  7. Transfer the lotion into the 4oz containers and leave to cool uncovered for about 1-2 hours before capping.

Aloe and Rose Shower-In Lotion

Total Time: 1 hour

Yields: 3 (8oz) bottles

Ingredients

  • 16.5oz aloe vera liquid
  • 2.7oz avocado oil
  • 9oz glycerin liquid
  • 7oz green tea seed oil
  • 5oz emulsifying wax
  • 4oz dl-panthenol
  • 2oz sodium lactate
  • 2oz vitamin E oil
  • 2oz aloe extract
  • 2oz optiphen
  • 3 (8oz) white disk cap bottles
  • 1oz BTMS-50 conditioning emulsifier
  • 9ml crisp apple rose fragrance oil
  • 2ml fuchsia labcolor

Method

  1. Disinfect all your tools by dipping them in a 5% bleach water solution or by spritzing with 99% rubbing alcohol and allowing them to air dry.
  2. Combine the avocado oil, green tea seed oil, glycerin, vitamin E oil, emulsifying wax, BTMS-50 and sodium lactate in a heat safe container. Pop the container in the microwave and heat using 1-minute bursts until the waxes have completely melted.
  3. Pour the aloe vera liquid into a separate container, and heat to 150F-160F/66C-71C. Add in the dl-panthenol to the liquid and stir to incorporate.
  4. Check the temperatures of both containers; each container should be between 150F-160F/66C-71C. Once they have reached the right temperatures, pour the oils into the water and stir repeatedly.
  5. Stick mix the mixture for 6090 seconds, ensuring the oil and water are fully emulsified. Burp the stick/immersion blender by tapping it gently on the bottom of the container to release bubbles as you dont want bubbles trapped in your lotion. Continue to mix until the lotion drops below 120F/49C.
