CONTENTS
Guide
T HIS BOOK IS FOR EVERY woman who has ever found herself adrift in unknown waters, as if she woke up one day living a life wholly unfamiliar to her and seemingly powerless to chart a new course.
It is equally for every woman who has felt as if shes lost in a sea of other peoples needs or drowning in endless responsibilities.
And it is for every woman who has been simply swept away, her identity all but forgotten in the tidal wave of life.
If you recognize yourself in any of these scenarios, as I do, take heart. I have made it my mission to throw you a life preserver and teach you how to navigate your way back to yourself. Together we will set our feet firmly on solid ground so that we have the freedom to take deep, refreshing breaths and to live our lives as we truly desire. And from there we will embark on a bold journey fueled by faith, purpose, and intention.
I SAT THERE IN MY BATHROOM , fiddling with my phone in front of the mirror. There. I had just the right angle, left arm extended and right arm ready to do the work. Not completely sure how to begin, I just smiled into my iPhone and said, Hi, there! Dominique here. I have been getting so many questions from you, my TV viewers, about... well, my eye makeup of all things. Ive answered dozens of you by email, but I thought it might be simpler and more effective to show you. So, here it goes.
I proceeded to demonstrate just how to achieve my signature smoky eye look. The muscles in my left arm started burning like fire as I tried to hold the cell phone steady while my right arm whisked, blended, and smudged. I offered encouraging words like, Dont worry if it ends up looking more like a black eye than a smoky eye, because you can just wipe it off and try again. Have fun with it. And then I ended by saying, Keep on sending me questions; I love hearing from you. I posted the video on my official Facebook page, the one I had through the Houston station where I anchored the evening news, wondering aloud if it was really such a good idea.
The response was almost instantaneous, and comments started pouring in.
Ding. Thank you, Dominique! I am going to try this tonight!
Ding. You make it seem so easy. I cant wait to do it. Whats your favorite eye shadow?
Ding. This is so cool! Thank you for sharing! Now talk to me about your hair.
And on it went. There were thousands of them. And I was floored. I had often joked that it didnt matter what I said on the air because the vast majority of viewer comments focused on my hairstyle, makeup, or wardrobe. I could report, The earth has just imploded, and someone would write in saying, Im not so sure about that blouse on you.
Luckily, I have a sense of humor. And Ive known for a long time that were judged first on our appearance; intellect, character, and personality come later. So maybe I shouldnt have been so surprised by the overwhelming response to my smoky-eye tutorial. But one thing I knew for sure: this was the start of something new, and my smoky eyes were wide open as to where it would all lead.
