Foreword
I dont think outside the box. I think of what I can do with THE BOX.
Okay, so I wasnt the crafter and upcycling guru that I am now, when I first started with all my DIY and crafting projects. As a matter of fact, I was considered a hoarder and a clutter bug. For many years, I have collected so much junk bottles, tons of tin cans and mason jars not only because I dont like throwing things out, but because I enjoy eating, cooking, drinking lots of water, storing things in jar and yes, drinking lots of wine. Believe it or not, but I am that kind of person has every valid reason to enjoy good wine - thus resulting to a garage filled with empty wine bottles, used and unused mason jars, lids, cans and bottles.
It didnt take long before I realized that I should definitely start de-cluttering my home. But I didnt want to throw away everything and I didnt want to add up to the worlds accumulating amount of garbage. So what should I do!? I thought of selling them, which is a pretty good option. And that was something I did for quite some time. And that helped me earn money while getting my garage cleaned. But when I saw one DIY video on social media, a sudden jolt of lighting struck me if they can upcycle these cans, jars and bottles, why cant I?
So I started researching and experimenting with the cans and bottles that I have left and found myself enjoying way too much. Dont get me wrong, I am not obsessed. I simply find joy and a sense of fulfillment everytime I get to complete a project. Soon, I was making different kinds of household items, decors and accents which I use and display at home.
I once made mason jar sewing kits and plastic bottle zipper purses for a few friends and they were amazed at how I made them using old items I had lying at home. They pushed and urged me to write a book to help others tap into their crafty sides. Chapter 1: The Wonderful World of Upcycling Your Trash
B efore we get into the DIY Upcycling part of this book, we should first understand why it is important to do this and what the term upcycling actually is about.
In this chapter, you will:
- Find out what is upcycling.
- Understand the different benefits of upcycling, recycling and crafting used items into something new and useful.
What is Upcycling?
I t is the term coined to describe the process of turning something considered to have limited or no use, into something more useful and full of worth. It is the upscale version of recycling. I always think that upcycling is adding more value to something through crafting and repurposing. Example, turning a used mason jar into a lighting fixture.
The Difference between Upcycling and Recycling
R ecycling is the process of collecting products of similar materials and blending them together to make something new, but normally, these new products are of lesser value and quality.
Upcycling does not necessary mean that you have to breakdown similar materials, but rather, repurposing and refashioning them to create something new that has a higher value whether it be aesthetically and usability.
The Many Advantages of Upcycling Things
T he following are considered to be the top and the most noteworthy benefits of upcycling cans, bottles and jars:
- Environment Friendly . This is true not only because you throw out less and less trash, but also because you will not be using chemical treatments to breakdown materials such as plastic and metals, which can harm the environment. You will also use less energy, fuel and water to dissolve, melt and breakdown these materials.
- Brings Out Your Creativity . You do not have to be a creative genius to wing these projects and produce artsy products. You can simply watch DIY videos, read tutorials and trust your instincts and you will be able to create upcycled items that are not just useful but beautiful as well.
- Saves Money . Upcycling can help you save money, because instead of buying new household accents, decors and tools, you can simply repurpose old items and turn them into things that you actually need.
- Endless Upcycling Possibilities. You are not limited to upcycling bottles, cans and jars; you can also upcycle old tires, cartons, old containers, old clothes, jeans, bags, suitcases and even household appliances.
Remember that if you think you do not have any use for them anymore, upcycle them and turn them into useful and environment friendly stuff.
