Introduction
What is the biggest attraction to RV living? Perhaps it's the idea of owning your life and having the freedom to do things. When you feel like you are stuck in a rut, as if your life is going in a cycle that you can't seem to break, maybe RV living is the break you are looking for. If you are doing the same mundane activities day in and day out, and never really experiencing other things until it is too late, maybe RV living will give your life new meaning.
Whatever the reason may be, be it adventure or freedom or the road, one thing is for sure: RV living will always give you something new. It's like being on this perpetual road-trip where you don't ever have to worry about going back home; mainly because you are bringing your home with you wherever you go. The idea of seeing more places, meeting more people, doing more things, and basically just enjoying lifeare just some of the biggest reasons to try RV living today.
Another good reason to consider RV living is that you get to own your own home. No more renting apartments, no mortgage, its just you (and whoever or whatever you want to bring with you) and the road.
Of course, it's not all peach and mango piesnope. There are pros and cons when it comes to living in an RV and this book will definitely present both so you can make an informed decision. However, keep in mind one thing: you downloaded this book because the idea of RV living entices you, so while you read it, please keep that idea close by. See if all the pros to RV living outweigh the cons and if this alternative lifestyle is for you.
Chapter 1 WHAT IS RV LIVING
RV living literally means living in a recreational vehicle (RV). If you've seen old western movies, you'll remember people travelling in caravans that are pulled by horses, I think that's the old-world version of RV living because that is basically their home. So, the strict definition of this alternative lifestyle is that you don't have a permanent address. You live on the road.
There are two kinds of RVers: part time campers and Full-time RVers. Well, the terms explain themselves, I think, and for the purpose of this book we will focus more on full-time RV living because if you decide to go part time, it is easier to do it when you're prepared for the full-time one.
Can You Afford It?
So, what are the things you need to consider before you begin this journey? I think the first thing on the list should be money. Can you afford it financially? How much money do you need? Remember, to do RV living, you need an RV, and they cost a lot of money; even the secondhand ones can be quite expensive. So, I think that is the first considerationcan you afford to start this journey and can you afford to maintain it? You also need to get insurances and pay for warranties, buy supplies, tools, food, and other miscellaneous items. Also, if you park your RV you need to pay rent for that parking space. It's not a lot, and many people actually make a decent living for $500.00 or less. Of course, this is because many of the things you may be enjoying when you live in an apartment or house cannot be bought, used, or even considered for RV living. So, a huge simplification of your lifestyle will have to be donefrom your wardrobe to your food.
Why Do You Want to Do It?
The next thing to consider is why you want to do it? Remember, RV living is still a way of life. It is not a never-ending vacation. If you haven't tried camping before, and you spent most of your life with the conveniences of a modern home, RV living will be a huge change. You will have to wash dishes by hand. You will have to make your own bed, and you will not have a lot of space to do it in. Taking a shower will not be as convenient because the space for your bathroom is no bigger than a tanning bed! Also, you will do all your cooking, cleaning, and maintenance work. So, you may want to ask yourself if you're up for it.
Things to Consider
Now, if you are up for it, here are some of the things you need to prepare for. First off, you need to know how to drive, which sounds dumb, but if you think about it, as basic as it is, good driving can mean life or death in an RV. Along with this responsibility comes other responsibilities associated with owning a vehicle, like maintenance. You need to become your own mechanic. You have to know how to change tires, fix the engine, clean the RV, weatherproof it, and you also need to know how to read maps.
Next, you need to learn about power management because, basically, you will become your own power supply company. You need to know how much power is consumed by each appliance in your RV. You also need to learn about plumbing because you will also be your own plumber. You need to know how to fix water fixtures, tighten gauges, etc.
Then, you also need to learn about cooking and we're not talking about gourmet food here, but easy to prepare, easy to cook, and easy to clean up kinds of dishes. You also need to learn about managing storage spaces and allocating permanent areas for certain activities so you don't have to organize or clean things up all the time.
Lastly, you need to learn about sewage maintenance and water supply management. Both are related because, in most RVs, your water supply tank and your septic tank are close together and you need to know how to maintain both. While you're on the road (maybe travelling between campgrounds), the black tank (the septic one) will fill up quickly, while the gray tank (water supply) will empty out fast. Also, because the black tank will have solids in it, there is a possibility that these solids will coagulate and harden inside the tank. You need to know what chemicals to use to avoid that and when to clean out the tank thoroughly so that doesn't happen.
The last thing you need to consider before you head out and look for your own RV, is your travel companion. Remember, if you are going full-time, you need to make sure that whoever is going with you agrees to this change in lifestyle. So, what are the things you need to think about concerning your travel companion?
If you are single and will be travelling with pets, make sure you include in you plans the well-being of the animal(s). They can be placed at risk and not just with the changes in the weather, but other hazards such as getting lost because you are always in a new place every day, or when parked, they can also get run over by other RVs.
