Chapter 01: A brief introduction to freelancing
A LOT OF YOU MIGHT have heard the buzz word "freelancing" all over Facebook, or you may have attended a seminar that hinted about freelancing. If you're wondering what it is, then here is your answer:
Freelancing is a business lifestyle that gives you the freedom to work from anywhere, anytime you want. It doesn't require a 9-to-5 routine, unlike other jobs. A freelancer gets hired and paid by the clients on a project-to-project basis.
Once things start to work out, youll get busy, but the freedom freelancing provides is not even remotely close to a full-time job.
Imagine, you wake up early someday, and you grab your laptop and start working while you're in the blanket, or you attended a party and got home late, no worries, you can catch up on the work afterward.
A lot of freelancing experts say that freelancing is a business-lifestyle. It's true because:
-You get to choose your clients
-You can decide your working hours
-You can work on your couch
-You can travel and continue working
-You can do it as a side hustle
-You can play with your dog
-You can spend quality time with family
So if you never heard of freelancing before, youre in good hands because this ebook is written just for you. Perhaps, you grabbed this ebook because you want to learn what the heck is freelancing or how you can become a freelancer to make a living.
The purpose of this ebook is to help educate people who keep hearing about freelancing, but never find a resource that teaches them how to get started with freelancing.
Before I dig deeper into freelancing guidelines, Id like to highlight that freelancing itself is not a thing, but instead, its a methodology of working for someone and getting paid without being a full-time employee.
For example, I work as a freelance writer because Im a blogger and I write my blogs. So I offer the same service to other blogs and companies. The reason I chose freelance writing is that Im passionate about blog writing. Id rather write articles on favorite topics than design logos or create music or review mobile phones. Not only am I good at writing blogs, but I also enjoy doing it.
So its essential for you to choose something youre good at or you love doing it. Youll read more about this in chapter two.
If you still have doubts about what freelancing is, keep on reading this ebook because the purpose of this ebook is not to just explain freelancing to you, but also to educate you on getting started with it.
You might wonder how you can start freelancing when you just started getting to know about it. So to figure this out, Id like to ask, have you ever thought about any of these things?
-How can I work online from home?
-How people work on the internet and make money?
-How can I use my passion to do something after the 9-to-5 job?
-How can I utilize my skills to improve the standard of my living?
If the answer is yes even for a single question, then youre ready to become a freelancer. Remember that a freelancer is a professional who doesnt opt for a contract-based job but rather decides to work on a project basis.
Once you establish yourself as a freelancer, your clients stick with you for a long period, and the new ones keep pouring in from time to time. So you start establishing yourself as a freelancer.
There might be many things going through your mind, for example, how much can I earn as a freelancer? How do I get clients? What should I offer as a freelancer? How would I get paid from clients?
Trust me, Ill tell you a lot of such things in this ebook and more in the next ones, but right now, I want to be 100% sure that youre clear about freelancing. In case, you arent, Id highly recommend reading this chapter one again. The reason is that the next chapters are all about strategies, tactics, and methodologies. So I wont be explaining what freelancing is or what a freelancer does later on.
I intend to give you as much value as possible so that when you finish reading this brief ebook on freelancing, you could teach others about freelancing. But, of course, you must first focus on building your freelance career, then educate others on how they can do it as well.
So the first chapter was about the introduction of freelancing. The next chapter is about getting started with freelancing.
Chapter 02: How to get started with freelancing
P AY ATTENTION TO THIS chapter.
Freelancing is one of the emerging trends around the world. As of 2016, more than 47% of the world population has gotten access to the internet. The more people get access to the internet, the easier it becomes to spread the word about freelancing.
How to get started
Here are three steps that will help you start freelancing:
1. Find your strength
I always talk about finding a strength when people reach out to me about advice on blogging, freelancing, and YouTube. Its far easier to wrap your head around something you like than other things that dont matter to you.
What finding a strength means is that you know about your liking and make the most of it from a career standpoint.
Do you have a childhood friend who wanted to be a doctor since 1st grade? And, now, when youre a grown-up, you found out that he/she became one.
Well, finding your strength is something like that. However, its something you figure it out over time as compared to the example of the person who wanted to become a doctor since childhood.
Finding your strength is based on realization and self-awareness. Sometimes, people make you realize that youre good at that thing, or you become aware of your thing all by yourself.
So whatever it takes you to get out there and do something you love, you have to find your strength because its the ability to get something done without hesitation.
Maybe, you have a skill that you never noticed, or you may have a passion for something that you didnt share with anyone yet. It's up to you to figure out what your real strength is.
For example, when I started off blogging in 2009, I had no idea what blogging is, let alone my writing was terrible. As soon as I found out that this is something I'm passionate about; I instantaneously built up my mind that I'm going to go all in. By 2010, I was quite sure about following my passion.
