Preface
How would you feel if you clicked the APPLY button for a job you would most like to get and then have your phone ring less than fifteen minutes later. On the other end of the line, a hiring manager keen to invite you to come in for an interview?
Youd be shocked yet delighted, wouldnt you? Phone calls like that would lift your spirits and energy levels. Youd feel that you are doing more things right than wrong within your jobsearch. And, because you would feel your jobsearch is going so well, youd also gain a general sense of inner peace and experience less stressed about any dire money and bill situations that may have been plaguing you for a while now.
The strong return on your extra effort investment would naturally cause you to want to keep the high momentum going with every other job you apply to, in case this particular position isnt right for you. But no need to worry about all that right now, you have a job interview! If this is the position you are most keen on, at first youd hardly be able to contain your excitement enough to undertake thorough preparations to see you nailing the interview, so you get the job. But, you have time to calm down and get your head together.
Only something really negative would take that beautiful smile off your face!
The first time I received a phone call approximately fifteen minutes after I hit the APPLY button, a number of years ago sent me into that state of pleasant shock, for days.
Ive since had this quick response occur more than once to now to consider getting such quick phone calls especially those received on the same day as hitting the apply button a resounding success; especially when the call is received an hour or few later.
And I still bask in the enjoyment of the whole experience. Im just no longer shocked when it occurs.
I understand how rare, precious and enviable those quick invitations may seem to jobseekers who havent had this happen to them. But, Im not alone in having this type of jobsearch success as the normal now, rather than as one-off exceptions. Ive learned of family, friends and former colleagues experiencing similar super-quick responses for applications they have sent off too, to know it doesnt just happen to me.
And, it can happen for you too. I have no hesitation is saying that.
Last week this wonderful situation occurred for one of my clients, who I had written her resume from scratch. Except this time my client received her call less than an hour after she had hit the APPLY button for a job in a capacity and industry that she had never worked in before.
That fast phone call was super-exciting for both of us.
I had honestly expected her to receive invitations to interviews. We had both felt her resume was a winner as soon as we had a final draft. I simply hadnt imagined that her application would tip her over into the contact urgently side quite so much as it did. In hindsight, I can see why it had done so. But at the time, we could only hope that might be the case.
If your application is just right that is, if it ticks all the mental check boxes for the person making the culling decisions you too can be the candidate that gets such a delightfully quick response.
And if you arent yet experiencing them, dont be discouraged. Instead, see it is an indication that you need to make changes to your jobsearch materials, is all; whatever and however many changes that are required.
But even when calls inviting you to attend an interview dont happen quite so quickly as Ive described, the very act in stepping your jobsearch tools up a notch to get your resume doing more of what works and less of what doesnt can greatly shift your jobsearch from frustration and lack of results, to heading in the right direction and achieving a faster successful outcome for yourself.
This book aims to try to help you reach getting a moment or two (or more!) to feel like youve just won the jobsearch lottery so you too can experience those highs and pleasantness. But, youll need to be super-keen to impress and excite a hiring manager.
If you arent prepared to put in some quality time into writing or righting your resume content, then you may as well stop reading this book right now. Thats right; you can stop and put the book back. Maybe even return it for a refund. Because, if you arent ready to learn (and use) good communication techniques in your resume then this book isnt the right one for you. And therefore is simply a waste of both your time and money to buy or read this book.
If you are super-keen to learn what you need to do, then first read on and second take action to right your resume content from what you learn herein. I aim to teach you what to do and how to do it, and will endeavour to assist you make important content decisions along the way.
If you follow through to take the needed action and implement the advice and suggestions given because not everyone that reads quality advice will follow through on it this book will push you to tap into the minds of the hiring managers for the type of work you seek to gain. And it will urge you to use the wording and placement of content so that it convinces that hiring manager to view you as potentiallysuitable, regardless what that type or level of work you seek is. Enough for them to become greatly impressed by your application; excited and motivated to learn more about you as a person and as a potential candidate.
So impressed and keen to learn more about you that they just have to pick up the phone and call you to arrange a good time to meet immediately; scared that the best applicant theyve received will apply to other jobs and be snapped up by a rival company if they dont take action NOW.
