Introduction
Apple launched a new low-budget iPhone, the iPhone SE in April 2020, which is a replacement to the iPhone SE 2016. Like its predecessor, the iPhone SE 2020 is the most affordable iPhone from Apple.
It is similar to the iPhone 8 in shape, unlike the first iPhone SE, which looked like an iPhone 5. It comes with a 4.7-inch Retina HD LCD screen with True Tone to complement the room lighting, Dolby Vision, Wide Color, and HDR10.
The iPhone SE comes in black, red, and white, with a glass front and rear and an aluminum band matching the phone color. Wireless charging is provided and possesses IP67 dust and water resistance so that it can withstand splashes and even short water immersions.
Since the iPhone SE is physically similar to an iPhone 8, it still possesses compact bezels at the top and the base. The top bezel holds the front-facing 7-megapixel camera and microphone while the bottom bezel contains a Touch ID Home button for biometric verification based on fingerprints.
The iPhone SE 2020 is the only iPhone in Apple's present lineup that keeps using Touch ID over Face ID. Like other iPhones, it possesses Haptic Touch for rapid actions and context menus, with the removal of 3D Touch from the iPhone series.
The iPhone SE features a single-lens 12-megapixel camera on the back with an f/1.8 aperture, Portrait Lighting, and Portrait Mode support, and optical image stabilization. The iPhone SE has no Night Mode, but Smart HDR, Wide Color Support, and more, and as well as a True Tone with LED flash featuring Slow Sync capabilities.
With optical image stabilization, time-lapse video, and slow-motion video support, the iPhone SE camera can capture 4K video at 60 frames per second. The front camera also offers Portrait Mode, using the Bionic A13's neural motor and image signal processor.
Within, the iPhone SE is equipped with advanced chip technology, using the same A13 Bionic chip as the iPhone 11, which Apple claims is the fastest processor in a smartphone to date. The A13 Bionic has a specialized 8-core neural motor that can execute 5 trillion actions per second, two Machine Learning Accelerators on the Processor, plus a Machine Learning Controller for enhanced performance and efficiency.
When it relates to battery life, the iPhone SE goes for 13 hours when watching videos, 8 hours when watching live videos, and 40 hours while listening to music. It supports fast charging and can power to 50% in 30 minutes using an 18W power adapter.
There's no U1 chip within the iPhone SE, but it carries WiFi 6 support, which is the newest and fastest WiFi protocol, together with Bluetooth 5 and Gigabit-class LTE with 2x2 MIMO. It also features NFC with reader mode and provides support for Express Cards (transit cards) with a battery reserve feature that permits cards to be used even if the battery is used up.
1. Design
The iPhone SE 2020 is comparable to the iPhone 8, although christened after the iPhone SE 2016 that shared a design with the iPhone 5. It showcases a 4.7-inch display with compact bezels at the upper and lower ends of the phone.
The top bezel includes a cavity for the front-facing camera, sensors, and speaker, and at the bottom is a Touch ID Home button coated in sapphire crystal.
The iPhone SE 2020 comes in an all-glass body like the iPhone 8, which uses a process of seven-layer ink to introduce color to the glass, giving a rich color depth. For a seamless look, the glass screen and the glass body are joined together by an aluminum band that tallies with the color of each iPhone, with small antenna lines.
The back features a single-lens back camera, an LED flash, and a microphone.
On the left-hand corner are the volume button and mute switch, while the right-hand corner contains the sleep/wake button. The bottom has a speaker hole and Lightning port, and like previous iPhones, it lacks a headphone jack, so Lightning or Bluetooth headphones are needed.
The iPhone SE 2020 has a dimension of 138.4mm in length and 67.3mm in width, with a thickness of 7.3mm, and weighs 5.22 ounces. It is the least of all Apple's iPhones in size, but much larger than the previous version of the iPhone SE. As the iPhone SE shares a layout with the iPhone 8, cases meant for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 will be suitable for the iPhone SE.
Color Variety: The iPhone SE comes in red, white, and space gray versions that incorporate a light red glass-backed cover.
Water and Dust Proof: The iPhone SE has IP67 water and dust resistance rating, which indicates it is completely resistant to dust and able to withstand 3.3 feet (one meter) of water for about 30 minutes.
The iPhone SE will withstand splashes, rain, and short unforeseen water exposure, but premeditated water exposure should be prevented. Apple cautions that water and dust resistance arent guaranteed conditions and could deteriorate over time due to normal wear. Furthermore, Apple's warranty does not include any form of water damage.
Touch ID: Apples latest iPhones incorporate an all-glass layout with Face ID, and to reduce costs, the iPhone SE keeps offering a Home button with a Touch ID fingerprint detector.
The Touch ID Home button is protected by a resilient sapphire crystal, which shields the Touch ID detector and a steel disc to sense the fingerprint. Touch ID is used to unlock an iPhone, fill in iCloud Keychain passwords, confirm purchases from the App Store, open passcode-protected apps, and confirm Apple Pay payments.
2. Display Layout
The iPhone SE also seems to feature the 4.7-inch display that was seen on the iPhone 8, having a resolution of 1334 x 750 with 326 pixels per inch.
It boasts of multi-touch capabilities, P3 wide-ranging color support for vibrant, true-to-life colors, and 625 nits maximum brightness.
True Tone: The iPhone SE offers True Tone, a feature that has been added in iPad and iPhone versions for many years now.
True Tone takes advantage of the surrounding light sensor to recognize the lighting in a room, changing the color temperature and strength to reflect the light for a better natural, paper-like viewing pleasure that drastically reduces eye strain.
3. Haptic Touch
While the iPhone 8 has 3D Touch support, the iPhone SE provides the same Haptic Touch features found on the iPhone 11 series.
Haptic Touch works similarly to 3D Touch and gives many of the same functions, but it isn't pressure-sensitive and does not allow many tasks for each press. Instead, it is best considered as a long tap or a touch and hold gesture, and with a haptic response.
Haptic Touch can function like 3D Touch all through the operating system and for many of the same functions, like performing Quick Actions on the Home screen, accessing links in Safari, triggering the flash on the Lock screen, accessing additional features in the Control Center, and much more.
Although the iPhone SE supports haptic Touch, it is interesting to note that it doesn't operate with notifications seen on the Lock screen or in the Notification Panel.
4. The A13 Bionic
The iPhone SE is configured with the same A13 Bionic chip included in the iPhone 11 series, which Apple has dubbed its fastest smartphone chip ever.
