The Internet of Things (IoT) is the creation, implementation, and usage of connected devices that allow objects to exchange data via the Internet using wireless technologies. The intent behind developing IoT devices is to help increase productivity and convenience by enabling objects to provide information about themselves in order for humans, other machines, or business systems to operate more efficiently.

The term Internet of Things originally appeared in the year 2000. with the phrase Internet of Things coined by Kevin Ashton. Ashton was an Intel Fellow at the time, and he was working on a new platform that connected objects to the Internet. He aimed at providing more functionality to devices and introducing them to greater online interaction. His idea was revolutionary because it changed the way we interact with everyday objects. Connected objects are able to be sent data themselves and work autonomously as well (Figure ).
