To Mom:
For overlooking every drop of fixer
that stained your basement floor, and
for everything you taught me that
I never realized until you were gone.
This is for you.
Acknowledgments
Id like to thank:
Yelitza Hurley, for supporting every move your crazy husband decides to make. You are my partner in crime and, as everyone knows, the power behind the throne. Love you mama!
Mia & Oriana Hurley, for showing up in mommys tummy and kicking daddy into high gear.
Dad, for not only sharing your love of sailing with me by throwing me in a duckboat at a young age, but for supporting me when I followed in your footsteps with my own Olympic dream that eventually led me to having a camera in my hand.
Skip Hurley, for always being the supportive, go-to-in-a-pinch, big brother. For letting me crash and then having the wherewithal to kick me out when it was time to get my act together, forcing me to get this show on the road.
Ryan Hurley, for pushing me to be my best and pointing out all the little things that I could improve upon in a way only a brother can.
Caggie Simonelli Bradford, for your vision that created the turning point in my life, and that caused me to take off like a rocket ship down this crazy path.
Bruce Weber, for encouraging me to pick up a camera and for the inspiration youve provided for me every single day that I hold one in my hands.
Mr. Ramiro Montoya, for being the first to show me the ropes around a camera, and for walking me into that store in Madrid to buy the one that got this entire operation on the move.
Bob Proctor, for guiding me toward a pivotal decision that completely changed the trajectory of my life.
Josette Lata, for believing in my work from the get-go.
Joe Barna, for being my confidant the entire journey and for all the work you put into making my images shine from day one.
Joe Pelosi, for creating my brand from the start and backing me up on every crazy idea weve had all these years.
Anna Rowley, for getting my ducks in a row, allowing me to walk my walk and talk my talk.
Lee Morris & Patrick Hall, not only for your support of everything weve done together, but for walking in my door and putting a video camera on me that very first time.
Zack Arias, for taking the time to have lunch one day and giving me the push I needed to begin teaching.
Damian Battinelli, for rolling into my life like a freight train, putting up with our extensive FaceTime sessions and my wishy-washyness while perfecting all the images for this book.
Pedro Jorge, for being my extra set of eyes during our late night sessions while heading down the home stretch to finishing this sucker.
Cindy Snyder, for your unyielding support in driving this puppy home and for being there 24/7 whenever I needed you. Whether it be my late night texts, freaking out emails, or those calls where you talked me back off the ledge, you never faltered. Youve had my back every step of the way, and Im so fortunate to have had you along for the ride. Im so proud of the work we did together, and this book wouldnt be what it is without you.
Jessica Maldonado, for creating a killer look for this book that Im so proud of and absolutely loved right off the bat.
Kim Doty, for hanging tough with me through out the entire process and helping me get this sucker flying off the shelves.
About the Author
Dave Moser, for planting the idea of a book in my brain and then taking the time to either lend me an ear or give me a shoulder to lean on whenever I felt the need.
The rest of the KelbyOne team, for welcoming me as one of your own.
Last but not least, Scott Kelby. First, for letting a petrified headshot photographer speak on the Google+ stage before anyone knew who he was and, now, for giving me this opportunity to call myself an author. This book wouldve never come into existence without your generosity and countless hours sitting with me while I spewed my banter at you, creating the recordings that are the backbone of this entire book. I am truly grateful to a man that not only cares immensely about teaching others to become better photographers, but who has the innate ability to lift those that desire to teach, as well. Thanks, Scott, there really wouldnt have ever been a SHA-BANG! without you.
Peter Hurley is a bit of a rare breed. His haphazard way of moving through life has had him riding the waves around the world on a sailboat, plastered his mug in magazines modeling for the likes of Polo and Abercrombie & Fitch, and put more than 10,000 faces three feet in front of his lens. His prowess behind the camera fueled his desire to educate, and he has spoken at Google, Apple, Microsoft, and TEDx. He has taught at the Photoshop World Conference & Expo and WPPI, among others, at numerous workshops, as well as online through classes on KelbyOne.com. His coaching/referral platform for photographers, called Headshot Crew, comprises the largest group of headshot specialists in the world. Kicking his entrepreneurial side into high gear, he founded a photography gear company called HURLEYPRO and co-founded a new discipline called PsyPhotology, a unique concept intertwining psychology with photography. He is proud to add author to his list of accolades as he releases his highly anticipated book,
