Introduction
The corporate workplace is an environment with many challenges and situations that are risky, hostile, and unwelcoming. The corporate workplace usually requires its workers to be fit, meaning those who are better equipped and prepared for success. The reasoning goes that the term fit means one has the characteristics and aptitude that improve the chances for success. To be fit and capable of succeeding, you need to have the knowledge and understanding of your environment and the best skillscognitive, communicative, and interpersonalto assure your fitness to compete in the corporate workplace. The corporate workplace has all kinds of workers with different habits, likes, dislikes, and a variety of tendencies and behaviors, both good and bad. The law of the workplace is the company rules that try to keep the work environment safe and pleasant. But you still need to fend for yourself. Nothing is given to you from a career-growth point of view. You are on your own.
The corporate workplace is fast paced at all costs and is always changing. This kind of environment requires you to be constantly vigilant so as to spot changes and be capable of reacting to those changes to better your position. The corporate workplace, where every day can often be a challenge, may not be conducive to acquiring the habits and skills you need for success. You need to keep your head straight yet on a swivel so as to observe everything around you and watch out for anything and everything that may happen. This advice applies at all times, no matter where you are.
Now, I am not a pessimist; I am an optimist. I always see the glass half full. I wrote this book not because I distrust or dislike corporate management or capitalism. In fact, I embrace capitalism. Instead, I wrote this book because I am a realist who accepts the workplace as it is, and I am prepared to deal with it accordingly. I love helping people get new jobs and put their careers on track. This book is my way of using my experiences and knowledge to help those who may not realize that the workplace can be an unwelcome place they need to be prepared for. I believe all workers must take control of their careers and their lives. There is more to life than work, yet work brings in the cash and the ability to do the fun things in life. You also need to enjoy work because you will be working many hours for the most part of your life. You need to know what is good for you and your family. Find the right job that provides for what you want in life. This book will help you do just that.
Nobody told me what the workplace is like; I had no information about life and the working environment. I learned the hard way. I didnt know much about the workings of the corporate workplace, but I worked at many companies and performed many different jobs in different departments and business functions. I worked with many people and bosses and held positions as manager, supervisor, and regular worker. My areas of expertise include audit, corporate accounting, risk management, treasury, capital markets, public accounting, and consultingspecializing in accounting and valuations of securities and related systems development. There are different ways in which things can be done. There are different kinds of peoplesome who flourish and others who are stymied in this business environment. You need to be prepared for this disorderly and disruptive world where you will spend most of your life and will need to succeed. You will succeed by following my advice in this book.
You will travel many roads throughout your life and professional career. Most roads will be physical, the kind you drive on to get to work, to go shopping, or to go elsewhere. For these physical roads, you carry a roadmap or GPS application on your mobile device. You will also travel many imaginary roads in your professional career and social life. Like the physical roads, many of the imaginary roads will not be paved or smooth. These roads will be devoid of guiding information and directions and will lack the necessary milestones for measuring your successes and accomplishments. You dont want to travel these imaginary roads aimlessly or without purpose or direction. Like in the physical world, you will need a good roadmap for making it in the corporate world. Your roadmap for these career trips will be a plan that defines your goals or desired outcomes and includes the major steps or milestones needed to reach those goals. Your roadmap will serve as your communication tool to support your thinking behind both your goals and the plans for getting there. This book is your roadmap for traveling through the corporate workplace.
This book is both serious and light-hearted in giving you advice and instructions. Each chapter covers a specific topic and can be used as a guide for that topic. Each chapter stands alone but complements the other chapters. The chapters cover all important aspects of succeeding in the corporate workplace. Most people are not prepared, but you will be after reading this book and following my advice and counseling. This book doesnt have all the answers, but it does provide you with a great roadmap for your journey through the corporate workplace. This books contents and advice are based on my personal experiences and NOT on proclaimed experts and members of academia in the human resources field. However, I have gained some of my knowledge through training courses conducted by business experts and human resource professionals.
I want you to start out and get it right from the beginning. You may have just graduated from college or technical school and are not sure how to start your career. Instead, you may be planning to start a new career. Either way, you should be preparing yourself for what may happen. You may get hired and then fired for not being prepared. You must have the tenacity and determination to begin your life-long career the right way, or your life will not be as fulfilling as you wish. For those already in a career, this book still provides good advice and instructions in many other chapters for building your career and avoiding the pitfalls that you may encounter. Anyway, begin with Chapter One, which may bring back memories of steps you had taken, will tell you what steps you should have taken, and will prepare you for a career change.
Most of the knowledge and subject matter in this book, except for my opinions and anecdotes, can be found in many places (books, libraries, Internet searches), but you need to determine what you want to know, search for it, and then compile that knowledge. Or you can read my book, because I have already done all of that for you. I wrote this book to not just be current but also offer a possible view of what is to come. Throughout this book, I present my own work experiences and include various related metaphors and anecdotal comments. I also provide Bills Opinion sections after a discussion on specific subjects and Bills Tips for answering standard interview questions.
