The oldest of the Hawaiian Islands, Kauai is a verdant retreat where natural wonders and quiet towns peacefully coexist. Its laid-back old-Hawaii charm makes it the perfect getaway. No one is in a hurry, and relaxing at the beach or trekking through the mountains is all the entertainment you need.

Its easy to see how the famed Garden Isle earned its nickname. Approximately 90 percent of the island is uninhabited, with Mount Waialeale (the wettest place on earth) and its towering ridges reaching from the center of the island out toward the sea in all directions. Sculpted by erosion, the beautiful and vast Waimea Canyon and Na Pali Coast offer majestic lookouts and hiking trails that weave from ridgelines to canyon floors. Kauais waterfalls and wide rivers flow to the ocean, telling the story of the islands rain-cloaked natural history.

This gorgeous island offers civilized pleasures as well. Internationally renowned chefs showcase their one-of-a-kind Hawaii Regional Cuisine. Kapaa towns eclectic shops, full of locally crafted jewelry and art, draw shoppers, and couples find renewal at the luxury resorts.

Hanalei Bay

But without question, the beaches are the islands main draw. Sunbathers find secluded nooks of fine white sand to soak up rays, surfers revel in the world-class waves along the north and south shores, and snorkelers rejoice in the vibrant underwater world along the islands reefs. Kauai is a gorgeous testament to the natural and cultural beauty of Hawaii. Its aloha at its best.

Where to Go
Lihue and the East Side

The east side, also known as the Coconut Coast, stretches from Lihue to Anahola. The area offers historical sites, river kayaking, waterfalls, and beautiful coastlines. Lihue, home to Kauais largest airport, is the hub of commerce and government for the island. Wailua is home to the famous Wailua Falls and Wailua River cultural sites. The biggest draw is Kapaa, a colorful town known for its whimsical cafs and eateries, as well as its eclectic shops with locally made goods. Inland behind Kapaa are miles of great hiking trails with amazing views.

Princeville and the North Shore

The north shore is a true tropical paradise with vibrant green cliffs and streaming, ribbon-like waterfalls backing some of the islands most spectacular white-sand beaches. The area is known for surfing and snorkeling. Upscale Princeville, perched on a bluff high above the ocean, features luxury accommodations, vacation rentals, and a residential community. Down in Hanalei Valley is quaint Hanalei town with charming shops and great restaurants. At the end of the road is the Na Pali Coast, where miles of strenuous hiking trails lead adventurers to secluded beaches, waterfalls, and valleys.

Poipu and the South Shore

Poipu is home to endless sunshine and the bulk of the islands accommodations. The region has white-sand beaches that offer snorkeling, swimming, surfing, and golfing. Poipu Beach and the Mahaulepu Beaches provide an exquisite setup for the perfect beach day. On the west end of Poipu are some must-see sights, including Spouting Horn and the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Inland from Poipu is historic and local town Koloa, with eateries and shopping.

Waimea and the West Side

The wild and remote west side is known for its deep canyons, pristine forests, seemingly endless white-sand coastline, empty beaches, and historic towns. Hanapepe is home to almost 20 art galleries and popular Art Night in Hanapepe. Most Na Pali Coast tours depart from Port Allen. Some of the islands most spectacular viewpoints and trails are found at Waimea Canyon and in Kokee State Park. And at the end of the road is one of the islands most beautiful and secluded beaches, Polihale State Park.

Know Before You Go
High and Low Season

Kauais high tourist season begins a few weeks before Christmas and lasts until late April. It slows down a bit until June and then is quite busy until August. If you are visiting during the busy season, its imperative to make car and hotel reservations in advance. Its not unheard of for rental car companies to be completely sold out during the high season.

Visiting Kauai in the off-season, from September to December and late April to June, is recommended. The island will be less crowded, and prices for cars, airline tickets, and hotels will generally be a little lower.
