I N THE SHOWS DEBUT SEASON, WE DESCEND UPON SUBURBAN M IAMI AND meet our four heroines, who share their lives, loves, hopes, challenges, and countless cheesecakes as they move through their golden years together. The performances are stellar, the storylines are both timely and timeless, and the jokes are as funny decades later as they were in 1985. And in spite of all of these facts, it is evident from the first episode that much of the humor will rely on topical references, both of the day and of the decades before.
The pilot alone introduces names like Indira Gandhi and Julio Iglesias. Some names and brands require little to no explanationDr. Scholls foot-wear is still around, and Coke and Abraham Lincoln are ubiquitous. Some wouldnt pack quite the punch as they did in 1985, like Polaroid or even Madonna, yet Chef Boyardee being an insult to a real Italian cook? Still funny.
Recurring themes emerge early on in this season. Burt Reynolds and his dinner theater come up early and often. And the popular-at-the-time Miami Vice is milked for humor. There are also plenty of brand names tossed out, mostly medications used to treat the aches and pains of older people.
There are politics, legendary comedians, nearly forgotten cartoons, and plenty more in .
