First of all I want to thank God for giving me wisdom for the retention of knowledge Ive accumulated with time, and for the understanding and the experience needed to write this information manual. This manual will be beneficial for every learning level. Even if you are an experienced songwriter, this guide will help you organize and improve your personal technique. And if youve havent written a song before, dont worry, this learning guide has been specifically written for you. I know there are similar books out there for you to choose from, but what makes this learning guide different is that you will be able to interact with me, the author. My purpose is to guide you through your learning process. I will be with you every step of the way, giving you my personal insight into the art of writing songs. I will take you with me onto my journey of self analysis, which will help you to analyze your self essential for becoming a successful song writer.
My name is Raymond S Newton Rivera. I came up with the idea of writing this information manual to answer the questions I am frequently asked. I am a music producer, singer-songwriter, currently working on my first album. Ive been writing songs since I was 12 years old. Throughout the years, Ive written over 30 songs registered in the Library of Congress. As an author, I will give you my perspective of a songwriter that is ready to make history for a positive cause. As an artist, I will demonstrate that you dont have to be a known artist to make it big in the music industry. All you need as an artist is to have a diverse supply of well-written songs. I will also give you an up-front look at four songs that will be part of my first album, which is coming out soon. I will use two of those songs as examples for how to learn basic song structure. You will have a clear difference in several types of songs and it will help you learn how to create your own rhyming vocabulary and how to write songs with sense and sequence.

My Musical
Perspective
Everyone has a personal story to tell. My songwriters biography started when I was 12 years old, but my love for music developed very early as a child. I was born on November 9, 1977 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. When I was still an infant my parents move to the States, where I lived between Homestead and Miami, FL for the first eight years of my life. In my initial years, late 70s, early 80s, I was exposed to a musical explosion of great songwriters, artists, and musicians. Even though my first language was English, Spanish was also spoken in my household. I remember listening to salsa, merengue. I was influenced by latin artist, such as Hector Lavoe, Frankie Ruiz, Eddie Santiago, El Gran Combo, La Fania, Johnny Ventura, Los Hermanos Rosario and bilingual artist such as Gloria Estefan Miami Sound Machine and Jos Feliciano recognized as the first Latin Artist to cross over into the English music market, opening the doors to others who now play an important part in the American music industry, as well as Menudo, the first Latin group to gain success around the world. I was also influenced by English speaking Artist such as Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Bon Jovi, Madonna, Olivia Newton John, Prince, The Beatles, Elvis Presley and last but not least, Michael Jackson, the greatest singer performer of all times. Who can forget the Freestyle/ break dance era, and the diverse in style, rock and dance love songs from the decade of lovethe 80s.Here are my top five songs from the 80s: Hello from Lionel Ritchie, which was the first song I remembered memorizing and singing completely as a child. My favorite hip hop song was I need love from LL Cool J; Lady from country singer, Kenny Rogers; Against all Odds from Phil Collins; and my favorite soft rock song of all time is I want to know what love is from the famous rock band, Foreigner. The 80s was, without a doubt, my initial childhood musical influence and it is the main reason most of the songs Ive written are love songs.
My late childhood, early teens musical influence started when I moved back to PR. I remember turning 9 years old, and for me it was very special. Even though my mother always used to take us on vacation to PR in summer time, this was the first birthday I remember celebrating on the island on which I was born. But as I came soon to find out, living and visiting are two different things. It turned out to be a little difficult for me to adapt because I had spent my early school years between Homestead and Miami, FL. I had completed kindergarten through second grade in Florida. But when I started going to school in Puerto Rico, even though I was raised in a bilingual family, I did not know how to read or write in Spanish, so I had to take Spanish lessons with a tutor every day for a couple of months after school.
But music helped me in a big way to learn and exceed in the Spanish language. I started memorizing and singing songs in Spanish; rappers and reggae artists such as Vico C, El General as well as reggaeton artists featured in mix tapes such as DJ Playero 37, DJ Negros The Noise, DJ Erick Industry and much more. I also remember that MTV quickly became my favorite TV channel and it helped me stay in with my musical atmosphere in the States while I was living in Puerto Rico. I loved watching music videos. I observed the visual expression of several artists between the late 80s and early 90s. I watched artists such as Snoop Doggy Dog, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Slick Rick, Warren G, K7, LL Cool J, Eazy-E. Even though I was not always a fan of the lyrics of a lot of the songs, I quickly became a fan of the musical style. My teenage musical influence was rap, hip hop, reggae, salsa and what we call now, reggaeton. This type of music helped me define myself as an artist and a songwriter at the same time. What I did was combine my initial childhood musical influence (lyrics of love songs) with my favorite teenage musical influence (the musical style I performed as an artist). I added my mental and spiritual perspective and came up with a unique personal musical identity . This started the first time I wrote a song when I was 12 years old. What happened at that age that changed my life? When my family moved from Florida to Puerto Rico we started living with my grandparents. They were both Christians so it wasnt long before we started going to church with them every Sunday. I remember, as though it was yesterday, one Sunday the pastor was preaching about wisdom. What he was saying caught my attention; he was describing the life of King Solomon, son of King David.
