THINGS YOU NEED TO GET STARTED
INTRODUCTION
Lets start this off with a question. Andit's a question that you should really consider before you answer. The question is this: How secure do you feel right now? Come on, behonest. Let me tell you a story.
A few days ago, I drove over to one of myfavorite restaurants to have a cup of coffee with a friend. He gotthere about the same time I did. We were the only cars in theparking lot and there was a sign in the window. It said Thanks for24 great years. It turns out that the owners had lost therestaurant. After 24 years.
There wasnt anyone around to ask but you canprobably guess what happened because it has likely happened in yourarea, too. Business fell off because people were worried about thefuture. Small businesses all over were going under and no one hadany money to spend on restaurant food. Does that sound familiar? When was the last time you ate out? Or went to a movie? Or had adate night with your sweetheart? Or were able to afford a collegeeducation for your kids? If you are like most people, the answerwill probably be something like, It has been a very longtime.
Today, it seems like everybody I talk to isfeeling insecure. Theyre insecure about their families; they areinsecure about their jobs, their ability to keep their homes, pretty much everything. I won't go into how we got here or whosefault it may or may not be, because everyone has a differentopinion on that one. And, frankly, there is probably some right andsome wrong in most of those opinions. But rather than driveourselves crazy with trying to choose who or what is responsiblefor the problems we find ourselves in today, lets try to figureout a way to get out of these hardships and get back to living ourlives. I think we can all agree that each of us needs to take somekind of personal responsibility for our situation and right now, take some action to make things better for ourselves and ourfamilies.
So let me tell you a few things about this. This is no nine-to-five job. You are the boss and you go where youwant, when you want. If you feel like taking Tuesday off because itis your anniversary, be my guest. In fact, this may be one of thebest husband-wife opportunities available. Not married? Your spouseis in another line of work? Thats perfectly OK. You can work soloor with a different partner as you choose. Personally, I likehaving a partner, but not all the time. So I do my own thing when Ifeel like it and have a partner when I feel like I need two extraeyes on what is going on.
So what is this opportunity that has everyoneso excited from Maine to California? Simple. I like to call uspickers. Why pickers? Actually, the work picker has a lot ofdifferent meanings. You can be a fruit picker or a lock picker or alot of other pickers. What we do, according to WebstersDictionary, is to select, to cull, and to gather. We go through allthe stuff that people want to sell, dont want anymore, or havejust forgotten about, and we harvest the valuable items, thegold that is sitting there for us. Have you ever heard theexpression, One mans trash is another mans treasure? Well, thatis how we earn a living. We buy and sell. We trade with others. Wemay buy and sell with the same person at the same time. But nomatter how we do it, on every transaction, the goal is to turn aprofit. And until you have tried it, you have no idea howsatisfying it is.
So, you say, what do we buy? What do we sell? And what do we trade? The answer is simple, yet very complex, andhere it is: Anything and Everything. Let me say that again. We buy, sell and trade anything and everything. Let me modify that just alittle for you: Anything and Everything, So Long as It Turns aProfit. And that can easily be different things for differentpeople.
Do you collect anything; anything at all? Iknow people that collect everything from antique sewing machines,to old Avon bottles and autographs. My father used to collectmatchbooks. I collect coffee mugs. People collect things. Peopleget fascinated with a technology, or an era, or a place, or a time.Maybe they collect cars, old computers, tube-type radios, books, toy trains or anything else you could name. Anyone you know whocollects anything is a potential customer.
Today, people more and more are returning tobygone times and looking for things that remind them of the pastand better days. On top of collectors, people are looking for hobbyitems, decorating items, toys, furniture, and on and on. I honestlybelieve that there is a customer for almost anything you can findfor sale. Yes, you may have to wash something, polish it, paint it,fix a scratch, or something else to make the item presentable andsaleable. But if you know a bit about what you are dealing with, you can avoid the fakes and make steady income.
Why be a picker? Well, first, maybe the bestthing about being a picker is that absolutely anyone can do this. One of the great things about being a picker is that anyone can doit. There are absolutely no barriers that I have ever encountered. It doesn't take a special license, an expensive education, or evenmuch money. About the only thing that it really takes is the heartand mind of a treasure hunter.
