Introduction
Gauteng might be the economic heart of South Africa, but its residents know all too well the provinces Cinderella status when it comes to tourism. However, were confident that this little guide will change everyones minds including those Gauteng residents who still hanker after living somewhere else.
Some highlights within Gauteng worth mentioning are the provincial governments Dinokeng Game Reserve (a 18 500-hectare park communally owned by over 270 private landowners, all committed to developing ecotourism), the Magaliesberg (the mountainous evergreen favourite), and the Cradle of Humankind (the famous World Heritage Site chronicling the history of our species).
These gems, and others like them, are overflowing with established and new accommodation options, destinations within striking distance for an effortless weekend break.
As well as having these and other great getaway options on your doorstep, a wonderful feature of living in South Africas smallest province is that you have speedy access to a host of other provinces. The surrounding provinces with which Gauteng shares borders namely the Free State, Limpopo, North West and Mpumalanga each have their own unique and diverse attractions, giving Gautengers exceptional choice when it comes to leaving the urban sprawl behind (see the regional map overleaf for inspiration).
We have not only listed the many great weekend getaways in and around Gauteng, but we have grouped them thematically too from quick breaks to those centred on family, fishing, romance and so on to assist you in finding a perfect fit.
To make it easy for you, each entry highlights the province its located in as well as website details and contact numbers. Weve also calculated the travel time and distance from the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Johannesburg, just because we love the structure so much, especially when its lit up at night. That said, travel time is of course traffic dependent, and we always recommend that you try and head out early on a Friday to avoid the rush.
At the back of this book you will find an index of sorts, where establishments are listed by province, as well as some generally useful contact numbers.
Much like the province its centred on, use this book as a springboard from which to explore the truly dazzling array of weekend getaways within easy reach of where you live. Once you start digging a little, youll be amazed at what lies on your doorstep.

QUICK GETAWAYS
Gold Reef City Theme Park Hotel
Johannesburg
Tired of the nagging to Please! Please! Please! spend the whole day at Gold Reef City? Heres the solution for parents with the spirit to plunge headlong into this entertainment emporium a weekend at the Theme Park Hotel. Of course you could always stay at the more grown up Casino Hotel at this fun venue in the southwest of the city. But staying right on the grounds of the theme park means you are just a short walk to the rides and can leisurely explore aspects you would normally rush past. One of these is a chapel, dating back to the gold rush and featuring a host of original elements, including the altar and pews. Opt for the standard room if youre on a budget but if money is no object (or if you get lucky in the casino) then go for broke with the deluxe suites, which are spacious enough to house a whole family.

Soweto Hotel & Conference Centre
Soweto
The Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication in Kliptown, meant to be a tribute to the historic gathering in 1955 when the Freedom Charter was adopted, is an odd place. Its only when you step into the foyer of the Soweto Hotel & Conference Centre that you get a real sense of the incredible history of the area. Much of this has to do with owner and manager Lindiwe Sangweni-Siddo, who has turned the hotel into a breakaway worth travelling into Soweto for. Whether youve got a concert to go to at FNB Stadium or just want to use the hotel as a base from which to explore Sowetos celebrated sites, Lindiwe will make you feel personally welcome. Stay in 1 of 48 rooms, and take in some great jazz music while eating at The Jazz Maniacs restaurant. You can also browse through the hotels extensive art collection a reflection of Lindiwes visible passion for showcasing the work of up-and-coming artists in the local community.

The Peech Hotel
Johannesburg
Were huge fans of using The Peech Hotel as an urban getaway for reasons too plentiful to list here. But one of these is undoubtedly owner James Peechs commitment to sustainability, long before it became a fashionable way to attract guests. Youll also find that the food at The Bistro, coupled with The Peechs renowned wine selection, is divine you wont have to venture out of the gates of this centrally located venue to indulge in fine dining. The real attraction, however, is the gorgeously appointed rooms: all featuring warm, understated dcor, they are roomy enough for you to forget youre in a hotel. If you feel like splashing out on your breakaway in the city then choose the garden suites their bathrooms are bigger than most hotel rooms and theres even a hanging pod chair in the main bedroom. With easy access to the gym next door and a host of things to do in the area, this is still hands-down Gautengs best in-the-city retreat.
