Starting theJourney
Starting a family is one of themost exciting times in your life, and once youve made the bigdecision to have a baby its pretty common to want to get pregnantas soon as possible. However, for many couples it can take farlonger than ever expected to conceive which can be incrediblydisheartening.
Youre certainly not alonethough. Statistics show that 10 to 15% of couples have troubleconceiving or carrying a pregnancy to full term. Infertility inCanada has doubled in recent years; this could be caused in part bythe amount of couples who wait until later on in life to havechildren. Whereas the twenties used to be the most popular age tostart a family, many are now waiting until their thirties, or evenbeyond, before having their first child. Although its well knownthat conception can be more difficult above the age of 35, itdoesnt mean to say its impossible. It simply means that a fewextra steps need to be taken to increase the chances ofsuccess.
The human body is a complex mixof tissue, hormones, chemicals and sheer magic. The things it cando are incredible, but when it doesnt do what we expect it can betough to figure out what the problem is. Having trouble conceivingmay be the result of ongoing or underlying health conditions, butoften its simply a case of your body being a little awkward andstubborn an dnot doing what you want it to.
Some bodies produce morehormones than others, whilst more still demand extra folic acid orvitamin C to be at their baby-making best. Your body is unique, andtechniques which may have worked for one couple to get pregnant simply may notwork for you. However, theres no need to get disheartened. Byattacking fertility from multiple angles and making a whole host ofchanges to your lifestyle you can significantly increase yourchances of conceiving within just a few months.
In this book well cover somekey areas you should be thinking about when trying to get pregnant;diet, exercise, sleep, sex, fertility drugs (and rock and roll). Itmay be a quick read, but it summarizes much of the latest researchyou should know about in short, easy-to-read chapters. Dont takeanything in the pages ahead lightly, as it could be the subtle andsometimes weird changes to your habits that will improve yourchances of conceiving and starting your own littlefamily.
Diet
Many of you will know that a good diet throughout pregnancyis crucial to help baby get all the nutrients he or she needs for ahealthy start in life. However, not so many people are aware thatdiet can have a huge impact on their ability to conceive, too, andthat goes for both men and women.
Eating the right foods andgetting the right vitamins and minerals can help to improve thehealth and performance of the egg and sperm long before they meet. Its incredible the impact that a few healthy changes can make toyour bodys ability to make a baby.
Fruit &Veg
It goes without saying thatfruit and vegetables are packed with healthy vitamins that are goodfor our bodies, but lets face it; many of us dontea t as manygreens as we should. If youre serious about getting pregnant youhave to make an extra special effort to get your five a day, butthere are some fruits and veggies even more powerful than othersthat you should consider implementing into your diet.
Asparagus has long been asymbol of fertility (hmm, I wonder why?!) but there is some meritto the old wives tale that its an aphrodisiac. It is very high invitamin C, a strong antioxidant, and is also packed with folic acidwhich is incredibly important for both male and female fertility. To maximise flavour and retain all its crucial nutritional value, lightly steam the asparagus so that it retains its shape (we dontwant anything floppy here). Not keen on the flavour? Dip it ineggs. Smother it in hollandaise sauce. Sprinkle with parmesan. There are so many ways to eat it that there are simply noexcuses.
Beetroot is another fabulousfertile foodstuff, and since its purple you can even fool yourselfthat its not really a vegetable. It contains resveratrol, anantioxidant which is said to combat age-related fertility issues. It also helps to increase blood flow which is ideal for women as ithelps to increase blood flow to the uterus and create a healthylining in the womb in preparation for that all-important eggincubation. You can roast beetroot in the oven with a little oiland garlic, or try drinking beetroot juice. Well admit, itssomewhat of an acquired taste but it can be good whizzed up intosmoothies.
Another non-green wonder veg is butternut squash, which isrich in a whole host of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Itsknown to increase sperm count and quality, so the guys out thereshould be chowing down as soon as possible. It also contains lotsof beta-carotene, which is what gives it its lovely orange colourand helps to produce progesterone, the hormone responsible for ahealthy menstrual cycle and ovulation. Progesterone is alsoimportant during the very early stages of pregnancy, so by eatingplenty of it youre increasing the chances of conceiving andreducing the risk of thing going wrong in the first few weeks ofpregnancy.
Pomegranates have long beenseen as a symbol of fertility all over the world and its easy tosee why; theyre round and filled with seeds. Yeah. But from ascientific viewpoint the myth is true. They contain vitamin C,vitamin K, folic acid and a whole host of other nutrients which areknown to improve the health of your cardiovascular system, reducethe risk of cancer and have anti-ageing properties. We know theyseem like a pain to prepare, but just chop them in half, bash onthe back of them to release those little ruby seeds, and stir intocouscous, quinoa and salads, or sprinkle over yogurt oroatmeal.
