PREFACE
The book is divided into three parts for convenience of making most out of this book; the first part is knowing interior design which includes learning the basic terminology used by interior designers, introduction to interior design profession, history of interior design profession and lastly the education plan for interior design. Second part is about the learning interior design includes every stage from building an interior design concept to making a plan and completing the entire project. Lastly the third part The handy Tips deals with the handy tips that can help you consider all the important tips required by interior designers.
From the prehistoric times the quest for a comfortable shelter and environments has driven humans to creatively adopt ways smart and sustainable.
Over a period of historic timeline many professions emerged as the need to survive challenged human mind. Like various professions the art and science of shelter dcor became a popular profession and a subject of interest in academic disciplines.
Interior designers learn the skills and techniques to make the living environments aesthetically beautiful and functionally practical. They learn to create ambiance through the use of color and all the supporting elements of design.
This beginners interior design book covers all the basic ingredients from the interior design terminologies to understanding of elements and principals of design. The book is a road map that will help interior designers to learn the basics to start their professional practice or to complete DIY home decorating projects.

The Glossary of Interior design
G LOSSARY IS AN ALPHABETICAL list of terms or words of a particular domain of knowledge, and understanding with the definitions for those terms.
Interior design: Is the process of designing the interior decoration of a room or building to enhance its beauty or make it look attractive for people.
A
Abacus: A flat top part of capital of a column, it supports the architrave.
Architrave: The lintel or beam that rests on the capitals of the columns. It is an element of Classical architecture.
Abstract: Style of design that uses general forms against detailed realistic representations.
Acanthus leaf: A leaf decoration mostly used on furniture, especially on brackets and legs.
Accent colors: Contrast colors used to enhance room color schemes. Accent term in interior design is generally referred to as secondary or supporting the main theme.
Accent lighting: Controlled and focused lighting for accenting interior decor elements or architectural details of a space.
Accessories : Objects such as books, plants, vases, lamps, and decorative pieces that dcor interior space is considered accessories.
Acetate : A synthetic fiber made from cellulose, it is usually combined with other fibers to add a luxurious feel and appearance. Acetate is used in many fabrics which is used to dcor interior enviornments.
Acroterium: Originally an ornament on the roof corners of Greek temples.
Adam style: British neoclassical style that dominated during the latter half of the 1700's. It is characterized by slender, graceful lines, refined shapes and restrained ornamentation.
Ageing : Decorative technique used to create the effect of wear-and-tear on wooden, painted, plastic, or other surfaces. It is used on furniture and wood to create effects that enhance interior environments.
Ambry: In medieval churches a chamber for the storage of goods. The addition of doors gave it the cupboard form
Ambulantes: A small portable table used as accent furniture piece.
American colonial : Term applied to all American furniture used by the colonies before the American Revolution. This style includes rough handmade pieces of the early American frontier.
American oriental: A machine-made local rug with Oriental design or patterns, and colors to resemble a hand-tied Oriental rug.
Amorini : Cupid ornaments (decorative element) found on Italian Renaissance furniture.
Angel bed: A bed with a canopy and no front support like head board.
Antique : Anything ranging from a piece of furniture to art. Mostly pieces that are 100 years old are considered as antique.
Antique finish (or Antiquing): A paint or finish that is applied to an object (mostly furniture items) to give an aged or old look to suit a particular interior ambiance.
Antique satin: A drapery (mostly curtain) fabric that has a lustrous shiny effect, normally made of rayon/acetate blends.
Apothecary chest: A low chest with small drawers that was originally used to store herbs for cooking, now used by many interior designers as accent table in interior spaces.
Arabesque: Decorative scroll work and other intricate / complex ornamentation consisting of foliage, vases, leaves and fruits, or fantastic human and animal figures.
Arcade: A series of arches (round and pointed), with supporting columns or piers.
Area rug: A small rug or carpet which covers only part of the floor. Interior designers use area rugs in many spaces to give the feel of warmth and elegance.
