Casting on
Every piece of crochet starts with a knot. The knot is not counted as a stitch when working a row of chain stitches. Start by threading the yarn in a loop.
Insert the hook through the loop, yarnover hook and draw through. Pull onthe thread so the loop tightens. Itshould still be loose, but not so loosethat it slips off the hook.
Chain (ch)
Hook through the loop and wind theyarn that is around your index fingerfrom back to front around the hook(yarn over hook). Draw the yarnthrough the loop.
Magic ring
Yarn in a loop, insert hook, yarn over hook and draw through. Do not tighten the loop just yet. Wind the working yarn around your left index finger.
Hold the point where the loop crosses between thumb and middle finger, make a loop, and draw through the ring on the hook.
Work the stitches around the loop according to the instructions (our example uses sc/ UK dc). Close the round with a slip stitch into the first stitch, then tighten the yarn loop at the beginning
Slip stitch (slst)
Insert hook into both loops on the stitch and draw yarn through. Unlike the sc ( UK dc ), draw this loop straight through the stitch and the loop that is on the hook.
Single crochet (sc)/ UK double (UK dc )
Insert hook in both parts of the stitch and draw yarn through (wind over hook from back to front). Draw this loop through the stitch loops.
You should now have two loops on the hook. Draw yarn through again and through both of the loops on the hook. This last step finishes the stitch, and is also referred to as finishing a stitch (for all types of stitch).
Half double crochet (hdc)/ UK half treble (htr )
Yarn over hook (wrap yarn from back to front around the hook), then insert the hook in both stitch loops. Draw yarn through (yarn over hook) and draw through the stitch loops.
As with the double crochet ( UK tr ), you will now have three loops on the hook. Yarn over hook again, and draw through all three loops on the hook in one move (unlike a double crochet / UK treble , where you do this step in two moves) to finish the stitch.
Double crochet (dc)/ UK treble (tr)
Replace the first dc ( UK tr ) in a row with 3 ch. Yarn over hook, and insert hook in the fourth stitch from the hook. Yarn over hook, and draw through the stitch.
Draw yarn through again, and through two of the three loops on the hook.
Draw yarn through again and through the two remaining loops on the hook finishing the stitch. Work all the following dc ( UK tr ) in the next stitches (unless the instructions say otherwise).
Treble (tr)/ UK double treble (UK dtr)
Replace the first treble ( UK dtr ) in the row with 4 ch. Yarn over hook twice, and insert in the fifth stitch from the hook. Yarn over hook. Draw this loop through.
You should now have a total of four loops on the hook. Yarn over hook again. Draw this loop through two of the four loops.
You will now have three loops on the hook. Yarn over hook again. Draw this loop through two of the three loops on the hook.
Yarn around hook once again. Draw this loop through the last two loops on the hook.
