17Helping Others to
Be Fair
It is fair to make sure everyone gets the same amount of pizza!
What Is Fairness?
To understand what it means to be fair,
you really have to understand one word.
It rhymes with the word fair. Can you
guess it?
Think about this. What if there were only
two pieces of pizza for you and two of your
friends? There are three of you and two
pieces of pizza. Hopefully, all of you would
Choosing the words you say to people matters. They should be chosen
with kindness in mind.
want be fair and have the same amount.
What would you do?
SHARE! (Thats the word!) Share
rhymes with fair!
When you are fair, you find ways to
share. You also treat others the way you
want to be treated, with kindness. You
think about how your words and your
actions affect others.
When you make a mistake, it is fair to take responsibility for it.
You shouldnt blame others.
Being Fair with
Others
You can show fairness to others in many
ways. One way is to take responsibility for
the mistakes you makeand not blame
others. Blaming others for your mistakes is
not fair to others. It is not fair to the person
you are blaming. It is not fair to the person
you are talking to. And, believe it or not, it is
not fair to you! Be fair to yourself and take
responsibility for your mistakes. That way,
you learn from them.
Playing by the rules of a game is the fair way to play.
Following rules is another way to be
fair. On many playgrounds around the
world, kids play a game called four square
or box ball. The rule is that you have to
wait in line to be the next person to play
the game. If someone cuts ahead of
others, that is not fair to those who have
waited for their turn.
Look!
Watch a sporting event on TV. Do you notice players being fair?
Do some point fingers and blame their teammates? Do you see
referees and umpires making sure that players follow the rules?
Does this make the game more fair?
Be fair to other kids by taking turns on the playground.
Take turns when you play games or do
other activities with your friends and
classmates. Remember, a fair person does
not cheat. If you cheat, you are not showing
respect for the game or for the other
people playing it. No one wants to play with
someone who does not play fairly.
Ask Questions!
If you are unsure about the rules of a game, ask other players or
an adult before you start playing. Discuss the rules with other
players. Make sure that everyone playing understands and agrees.
Then everyone will have a fair chance, and it will be more fun.
Games are no fun if you cheat.
A fair person always tells the truth.
Telling a lie is not honest and is a lot like
cheating. Remember this: Telling a lie
makes a problem a part of the future.
Telling the truth makes a problem a part of
the past. Be fair and tell the truth. This way,
you learn from the problem. Then you can
move on and not have the problem
bothering you anymore.
Contributing to chores around your house is a fair way to act.
Helping Others
to Be Fair
At home, ask your parents for chores that
can help keep the house clean. This would be
a fair thing to do. One person should not be
doing all the chores. You might set the table
for a meal, clean the dishes after a meal, or
take out the garbage. A family is like a team.
Great teammates are fair to one another.
It is not fair to make your brother or sister do more chores.
Share them equally.
Sometimes people ask others to do
things that they are not willing to do
themselves. It is not fair to ask others to
do this. If you can do something easily for
yourself but just dont want to, then you
are being selfish . Think before you ask
someone to do something for you.
Treat your friends and family members fairly. They will do the same
for you. This builds trust.
When you are fair to people, they will
notice. They will trust you. They will know
that they can count on you. And they will
most likely be fair to you too.
Think!
Remember a time when you were treated unfairly. How did
it make you feel? Would you ever want to make someone feel
that way?
