WHAT IS
PAT IENCE?
Eager to play, Jaime knocked on the door
of his friend Sirams house. Hey, Siram! Want
to play outside with me?
I cant, said Siram. I have lots of homework
to do tonight, but I can play tomorrow!
To Jaime, tomorrow felt like forever, but he
agreed and gave his friend a goodbye hug.
This is a great example of patience . Patience
means being okay with waiting for something,
Practicing patience is not always easy, but being patient
shows someone that you care about their needs too.
Waiting isnt just hard for kids,
it can be hard for adults too!
even if it feels dicult. When you want to have dessert
but need to wait until you eat your dinner rst, that is also
patience. Not everything can happen right away. Sometimes,
there are things we have to do rst, like paying attention
in math class before going to recess or doing chores
before playing a video game. And sometimes adults have
to do things before whatever you might want to do.
For example, your mom might have to nish
a business call before you can show her your
new art project.
Now lets think about what it might feel
like to be on the other side of patience.
Kiren is really good at making friendship
bracelets, and everybody knows it. One day,
Think!
We all practice patience
every day. Can you think of
a time when you were
patient? Or can you think
of a time when being
patient felt very dicult?
Has there ever been a time when something took
longer than you thought it would? How did you feel?
her friend Mira asked her to make a
pink bracelet. Kiren said she would
do it. The next day, Mira asked Kiren
if she was done with the bracelet
yet. Kiren wasnt nished because
friendship bracelets take a long
time to make. Mira asked Kiren
every day that week for her
bracelet, and Kiren started to
feel very stressed . Mira was
not being very patient or
understanding.
Make a Guess!
Think of the last time you felt impatient . How do
you think it made the other person feel?
People say be patient all the
time, but why is it important to
be patient? When you want
something or to do something,
waiting can be hard. But its good
to look forward to things that you
want, like going on vacation or
waiting for your next favorite
WHY IS
PAT IENCE
NECESSARY?
