Preface
This book was inspired by a lecture given at the American College of Emergency Physicians Scientific Assembly entitled The Death Rash: Lethal Rashes You Cant Miss. This lecture has been one of the most attended lectures of the conference. Despite knowing these conditions, providers continue to fear missing the diagnosis and the resultant significant clinical consequences.
Many life-threatening conditions present with mucocutaneous findings. These diagnoses are essential to recognize, and clinicians must be able to accurately diagnose these conditions, even when subtle or atypical in presentation. Early recognition and intervention frequently can reverse the disease course. These life-threatening conditions are relatively rare, and clinicians are far more likely to see benign mimics of these encounters. For that reason, several typically benign conditions are also discussed with key features emphasized to help differentiate them from more serious underlying conditions.
This book has been written by a tremendous group of educators and giants in emergency medicine, each with significant expertise on their given topic. All authors were instructed to make the chapter a highly visual, pragmatic guide for the practicing clinician. Each topic was chosen based on its potential for lethal consequences or for the fact that it is a common mimic of a serious diagnosis. This book is not exhaustive but rather emphasizes several diagnoses that are important to exclude due to their potential lethality and other diagnoses that are fairly common benign mimics. The authors highlight key differentiating diagnostic features, detail atypical presentations, discuss differential diagnoses of each condition, and give clinically relevant, high-yield take-home points that can be applied at the bedside.
I would like to thank each author who worked tirelessly to help accomplish the vision of this book. Every chapter has tremendous practical, clinically relevant pearls. Your work is appreciated, and your dedication is admirable. And thank you to ACEP for the inspiration and opportunity to teach such a fun course. May this book enhance your clinical knowledge and help you save lives.
