Introduction:
Crystals in Everyday Life

For as long as I can remember, crystals and stones have been a significant part of my life. As a child, I collected rocks. I grew up in coastal Washington State, where I spent hours on rocky beaches sifting through stones to find the perfect addition to my collection.

While I was always on the lookout for shiny agates, no stone was so insignificant it escaped my intense interest. I dug in flower beds, sifted through gravel in parking lots, scanned riverbeds and mountain trails, and dug through any pile of stones I could find to gather rocks that met my fancy.

I kept a box in the basement to house my growing collection, and I frequently visited it to sort through my treasures, holding and loving each as a piece of beauty from the Earth. Regardless of what the rocks looked like, holding them made me feel good, although I lacked the frame of reference at the time to understand why this might be. My time spent with my rocks left me feeling both peaceful and energized.

Even then, I instinctively understood what has come to be my guiding philosophy regarding rocks, minerals, gems, and crystals. Stones are gifts from the planet. Each, regardless of how it looks on the outside, houses great beauty.

I believe crystals and stones are beings that vibrate with ancient energy. When we live and work with them, their energy cant help but affect ours. At their most basic structure, crystals are made of the same material as we are. They are comprised of vibrating strands of energy held together by fields to form matter. Its the same way all matter in our universeincluding rocks, trees, plants, and peopleis formed from pure energy into conscious entities. The consciousness of the universe permeates all matternot just sentient beings. However, because the energy that makes up inanimate objects forms into structures that appear nonsentient, we must communicate with them energetically instead of how weve come to communicate with things we perceive as alive, such as plants, animals, and people. Therefore, communication and communion with crystals and other sacred objects occurs energetically instead of intellectually. Through consciousness activities such as meditation, intention, and ritual, as well as by sharing our space with crystals, we can combine their vibration with ours to create something that is greater than the sum of its parts. Crystals can enhance our lives with their ancient energy if we allow them to do so.
