Then, we'll bust myths that surround potty-training, such as early potty-training can cause bladder damage. Spoiler alert, there's no truth to it. We'll discuss a total of sixteen of these myths before moving on to how you can get your toddler to bid adieu to diapers.

We'll also expound on the problems that may arise in the potty-training process.

Did you know that there's a marked difference between daytime potty-training and nighttime potty-training? The biggest difference is the child's development. We'll elucidate how to go about nighttime potty-training and the precautions to take.

Is potty-training a boy different from a girl? Yes. The eighth chapter covers those differences.

What is a surefire way to build your child's potty habit? We shall talk about methods that embed this habit in their little minds, making them stick to a routine throughout the day, and eventually, throughout their lives.

Last, this book involves the transition from potty to an adult toilet and what the transition entails.

Chapter One: When to Start Potty-Training
Picture 8

P otty-training is an important milestone for you and your child, with its success depending on several factors such as the physical, mental, behavioral, and developmental changes in your child's life rather than just their age. However, most children display signs they are ready for potty-training somewhere between the ages of 18 months to 24 months. This is not a hard and fast rule, though, as some children might not display those signs before they are at least 3 years of age.

To ascertain if your child is ready for potty-training or not, ask yourself these questions:

Is my child able to walk to the toilet and sit on it?

Is my child able to pull their pants up and down?

Does my child stay dry for longer spells, such as two hours?

Is my child able to comprehend and follow my instructions? (Basic instructions; not advanced tasks)

Does my child convey the need to go to the toilet verbally and non-verbally?

Does my child appear to be interested in going to the toilet?

If most answers to those questions were yes, your child is probably ready to start potty-training. If most answers to those questions was no, then it might be better to wait.

Although it is agreed that the best time to start potty training is when your child shows signs of readiness, but another readiness must be accounted for: yours. Instead of appearing too eager for the training to your child, let them, with their own motivation, take the lead. Another thing to remember here is that your child's success or difficulty in the potty-training does not connote to their intelligence. And since this is a training process, they will inevitably make mistakes and make accidents throughout. This does not call for punishment. There is no room for punishment in the potty-training process.

Here, I summarize the series of steps you can follow to make sure things go smoothly after you have determined that your child and you are ready to begin potty-training:

1. Pick Out Positive Reinforcement Phrases

Choose a selection of words to say to your toddler when referring to their potty-training. Positive reinforcement goes a long way in making them feel encouraged and involved in the process. When referring to their bodily fluids, such as their urine and their poop, avoid using negative phrases such as "made a stinky" or "dirtied your pants." This will make them associate the activity as something shameful or reprehensible, which will put them off from their training.
