INTRODUCTION Quilts dont always have to go on beds and they dont have to be - photo 8
INTRODUCTION
Quilts dont always have to go on beds and they dont have to be huge for
us to enjoy them. In fact, there are many benets to making a little quilt:
they dont require a huge investment of fabric or time, they require very
little space for laying out and making, they are great for trying out new
techniques and skills, and they can be basted together on a table top and
then quilted easily, whether by hand or machine.
For many people, using pre-cut Jelly Rolls is an economical and
easy way to venture into the world of quilt-making. Jelly Rolls lend
themselves wonderfully to little quilts as the size of the pieces is ideal
for a small quilt. Of course, you can cut strips to size yourself, especially
if you dont want to use all your Jelly Roll collection at once this
will allow you to eke out the loveliness, using a bit here and a bit there.
Personally, I like to save every piece of leftover fabric, and use odd scraps
of Jelly Rolls in my little quilts so that every last piece of a collection
that I have loved can be put to good use.
Little quilts are an ideal way to continue our quilting tradition. There
is a well-documented history of little quilts, used both as doll quilts and as
crib quilts, so it is not a new concept to make little quilts to be used in our
homes or shared with others. If we look back at quilts from the past, the
fabric pieces were small, and the quilts were too. Some of the quilts in this
book were inspired by those old ones, and the sizing here was made easier
due to the pre-cut size of the Jelly Rolls. Many of the old quilts were
made from scraps from the scrap basket, and again we can do that today.
Even if we dont sew all of our own clothes, many of us often have much-
loved scrap fabrics left over that can see their way into a quilt.
