Acknowledgements
During the course of authoring this book I have had the opportunity to collect and read many fantastic books by other authors on both the subject of football in general and Newcastle United in particular. Add to this an expansive collection of match day programmes, and other officially produced paraphernalia, never forgetting the huge amount of information available on the Internet and many, many hours spent in various libraries the research has been long but invariably interesting and enjoyable.
So I would like to thank each and every one of those people - far too numerous to mention by name, and some of whom I unfortunately never got to know their name - but without each and every one of them there would have been no motivation for this book. Also to anyone who has written an article in newspapers, or books or who has taken the time to populate some excellent websites my thanks go to you too.
This is acknowledgement of your very valued contribution.
Special mentions go to Matt Steel and PinkTeaVanity.
Matt is a keen photographer and provided the cover image of the Tyne Bridge. To me the Tyne Bridge epitomises what Newcastle is and arriving back from away days its sight was a one that meant you were home. Whether you were elated with a win, comfortable with a draw or despondent with a loss the Tyne Bridge could almost capture your mood in its magnificence and sometimes stark coldness. Matt captures this perfectly I think in his photograph. Thanks Matt.PinkTeaVanity is a local artist, a lady of many talents. She provided the sketches used within these pages. Again the imagery PinkTeaVanity provides captures the at times energetic, yet other times drabness, of being an always proud member of the Toon Army.
Thank you all.
Introduction
There is no doubt that Newcastle United have been involved in some absolutely brilliant games over the years. There's been the truly memorable games such as the thrilling 4-3 defeat to Liverpool (03/04/1996) that even though Newcastle lost, the game stays in the memory as an exceptional advert for football. There was the thrilling fight-back in the 4-4 draw with Arsenal where after being 4-0 down after only 26 minutes, Newcastle clawed their way back into the game to score 4 themselves in the last 22 minutes. The great 5-1 win over Sunderland (31/10/2010) and 5-0 win over Manchester United (20/10/1996) and of course the two-legged final win over Ujpesti Dozsa to win the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, unfortunately the last major trophy I have had the pleasure of seeing Newcastle win.
We don't want to mention the succession of 'Derby ' defeats to Sunderland over the last few seasons, or the time they beat us 9-1 at St James's Park (05/12/1908)! Nor do we want to remember the heartbreak of losing in six FA Cup finals and the League Cup final. However, they did unfortunately happen so they are included in this book.
They have also had some fantastic players, Hughie Gallacher, Jackie Milburn, Bobby Mitchell, Len White, Colin Veitch, Alan Shearer, Kevin Keegan, Malcolm Macdonald, the list goes on and on. This book also remembers those who for whatever reason only appeared on a single occasion, their contribution is equally valued.
Presented in a diary, or almanac, fashion this book plots its way through the history of Newcastle United on a day-by-day basis and highlights interesting facts, figures and trivia. It includes every debut by every player, every first meeting with every opposition team faced, each scoring debut and much, much more...

Happy New Year!
It was for Newcastle fans in 1980 and 1985 as they recorded two 3-1 victories over arch rivals Sunderland. Also in 1921 when they enjoyed a 6-3 victory over Manchester United but perhaps the best may have been in 1934 when they would have seen 11 goals at St James's Park in a 9-2 demolition of Liverpool.
Lincoln City would have been sick of the sight of St James's Park on a New Year's Day as in 1894 and 1895 they were the visitors and lost both games with Newcastle being the victors by 5-1 and 4-2 respectively. New Years Day of 1930 saw the appointment of Andy Cunningham as manager at Newcastle which made him their first "recognised" manager folloWing the sterling stewardship of Frank Watt.
1904: Tyne-Wear Derby No. 13
Newcastle travelled to Roker Park for a League Division 1 fixture with Sunderland, the 13th Tyne-Wear Derby . The first half was goalless but each side scored in the second half making the final result 1-1. Ron Orr scored for Newcastle and the Sunderland scorer was Andrew McCombie and therein lies a tale...
1904: Newcastle Break World Transfer Record
Within days of the Tyne-Wear Derby mentioned above Newcastle broke the world transfer record to bring Andrew McCombie to St James's Park from Sunderland the then absolutely huge sum of 700!
1921: Newcastle Win 9 Goal Encounter
Manchester United came to St James's Park for a League Division 1 fixture and were soundly beaten in this high scoring game. It has to be admitted that at half-time, with the scores being 2-2 it did not look like either team would run away with the result but Newcastle certainly did. Scoring another four in the second half, to a single goal from Manchester, the game ended 6-3 to Newcastle. Their scorers were Stan Seymour and Neil Harris both getting two each and Andy Smailes and Tom Phillipson netting the other two.
1934: Newcastle Score 9 in 11 Goal Encounter
This League Division 1 fixture where Liverpool came to St James's Park was probably the best New Years Day seen on Tyneside for many a year.
A rampant Newcastle put 9 past Liverpool in a 9-2 demolition of the Merseysiders. Even one of their two goals was an Alec Betton own-goal. Newcastle's goals came from hat-tricks for Jimmy Richardson and Sammy Weaver and a goal each for Ron Williams, Tommy Lang and Jimmy Boyd.
1935: Hat-Trick Debut
An excellent debut indeed for Outside -Right Wilfred Bott, not only did he score but he scored a hat-trick on his debut today in the League Division 2 fixture with Bury. Further goals from Tommy Pearson and Jock Smith ensured an emphatic 5-1 victory for Newcastle at St James's Park.
1980: Tyne-Wear Derby No. 116
Newcastle played hosts to Sunderland for a League Division 1 fixture, the 116th Tyne-Wear Derby . Goals from Peter Cartwright, Alan Shoulder and Tommy Cassidy giving Newcastle a 3-1 victory. Stan Cummins was the scorer for Sunderland.
1985: Tyne-Wear Derby No. 118
Newcastle played hosts to Sunderland for a League Division 1 fixture, the 118th Tyne-Wear Derby . A hat-trick from Peter Beardsley giving Newcastle the same 3-1 victory as the corresponding fixture the previous season. Colin West was the scorer for Sunderland.
