FOREWORD

Soul Sistersthey come into your life in mysterious ways. They may be childhood friends, actual blood relatives, or strangers who bonded while going through a similar crisis. This female camaraderie, this instant trust and admirationits a beautiful phenomenon that I have had the blessing of experiencing with many women throughout my life, and the honor of sharing with Ambassador Suzan Johnson Cook. In a very short time we became close friends, business partners, and steadfast supportershermanas.

We first met at the Union Theological Seminary in New York City, where she spoke at a breakfast for Women of Faith. Sujay, as she is affectionately known by friends and colleagues all around the world, was then the U.S. 3rd Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom. Notwithstanding the impressive title, Sujay was just a warm, gregarious lady who was there to inspire and connect with the women attending the event. Through her stories, she captured the audience from the stage. I was deeply moved and followed a calling in my heart to introduce myself and say hello. Now, a few years later, I am humbled with the privilege of writing this foreword for Soul Sisters.

Actually, creating the sacred space and fertile ground where soul sisters are born is a very big part of my lifes work. My nonprofit organization, Milagros Day Worldwide, is dedicated to empowering survivors of domestic violence and childhood trauma through leadership coaching and mentorship. Our tag line is Turning Abuse Into Successand the only way to achieve that mission is through our multicultural community of sisterhood.

Reading Soul Sisters is like looking in the mirror and seeing our deepest inner fears and judgments dissolved. It is a knowing that through all our mistakes and our doubts we are okaywe are doing our best, and we are worthy of our own respect.

It is saying to our daughters and to our sons that they have a voice and we hear them!

Reading the stories in Soul Sisters reminds us that as we age, faith is our fountain of youth, and faith is what keeps us balanced. This book gives us permission to relax and enjoy the ride of life that is filled with laughter and loss, legacy and lovebecause through it all we will always have the comfort and the encouragement of our Soul Sisters.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

First and foremost, I thank God for the privilege and blessing of being given the gift of writing and for the ability to bring women together in person, on paper, in prayer, and in politics in both the public and private spheres.

God gives the talent; still, someone has to grant the opportunity. My literary agent, Lois de la Haba, along with Joel Fotinoswhom I refer to as the dynamic duoAndrew, and the Tarcher Penguin family have given me opportunity.

Id also like to thank Lindsey Payne, a young woman who helped me to compile this book and keep my many moving parts on track this past year.

I wish to thank Rev. Olivia M. Cloud, my Delta Sigma Theta sorority sister; and Adrienne Ingrum, who reminded me of her special gifts, warmth, and talent. Thank you to all the contributors, editors, and eyes that have peered through, and the anointed hands that have touched, written, and edited these blessed pages.

And as always, I thank my guysmy sons, Sam and Chris, and Ronwho always allowed me to be woman in a household of men. I wouldnt have it any other way.

And to all my prayer partners, Merc being the chief one, who have prayed me to and through, and looked out for me even when I didnt and couldnt pray for myself, or know who to look out for, thank you.
