Once again, to Theo, Max, and Wes.

This book was completed during a very difficult time for our family, and for all families. But you constantly reminded us to take joy in the moment, and to dream of better roads ahead

For that we can never thank you enough.

CONTENTS

INTRODUCTION

Over a decade ago, we found ourselves with twin baby boys and a serious case of cabin fever. So we bought a pop-up camper hoping it would provide a more comfortable way to road-trip with our kids. It provided that in spades, but it also introduced us to a pastime that has changed our family forevercamping. We loved our time at the campground so much that we began blogging and podcasting about it, then we started writing magazine articles and books. Camping has inspired us to spend more time with our children, family, and friends in the great outdoors, and we love to encourage other people to experience the magic of the campground.

Weve been camping as a family for more than ten years and sharing campground recommendations for almost as long. We decided early on that instead of reviewing every campground we visitedgiving thumbs up or thumbs downwe would only share the ones we absolutely loved on our website TheRVAtlas.com and our podcasts The RV Atlas and Campground of the Week. Weve spoken and written about hundreds of our favorite campgrounds across the country and invited other passionate campers to do the same. Those campground recommendations are the inspiration and backbone of this book.

Although many of the campgrounds in this book are personal favorites from a decade of family travel, this collection is so much bigger than our own camping experiences. We love talking to adventurers from around the country who camp in unique ways. Some prefer dry camping at remote state parks in Utah. Others choose RV resorts with full hookups and pull-throughs whenever they have the choice. We are truly in awe at the range of amazing camping opportunities throughout this beautiful country and have worked hard to demonstrate that there is no one way to camp and no one type of perfect campground. Weve built a community of campers over the years that offer different points of view for what makes a great campground, and we hope this book represents those inspiring voices. Our podcast listeners message us regularly with campground suggestions and often help us plan our future camping adventures. The members of our private Facebook group have introduced us to the wonders of places that were never even on our radar.

With the help of this diverse and expansive community of campers, weve gathered up a dreamy collection of state park campgrounds, national park campgrounds, RV resorts, and unique glamping destinations. We love them allthe rustic Cedar Pass Campground in the Badlands, the Jellystone Park Camp-Resort near Shenandoah National Park with waterslides and hand-dipped ice cream, and the canvas glamping tents on the Oregon coast. We have tried to select a wide variety of amazing campgrounds. No matter where you are in this country or what type of camping sparks your wanderlust, we hope you find some inspiration in the pages of this book.

See you at the campground,

Stephanie + Jeremy

GETTING STARTED

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

There are great campgrounds in every single state. That was a guiding principle for us as we wrote this book. Where Should We Camp Next? is our handpicked selection of the best campgrounds in the country, arranged by region and state. But its also much more than that. We hope this book serves as that garrulous friend who sits around the campfire all night recommending the best campgrounds, hikes, food, books, movies, fishing holes, and off-the-beaten-track activities that no one else knows about. We all deserve a friend like that, dont we?

We separated the campground reviews in each state into two categories: Best in State and Also Great. Best in State campgrounds are featured on the maps that start each chapter. In many cases the slimmest of margins separated campgrounds in each category. Sometimes a campground earned Best in State honors because of some subjective quality that was very personal to us. In other cases, we simply felt that these campgrounds had the broadest appeal to most campers. However, we also wanted to start a conversation and spark a debate with our readers. Our Best in State might be different than yours. That would be a fun conversation to have around the campfire one night, wouldnt it? If you are just starting out as a camper, maybe you have no basis to agree or disagree. In that case, we hope this book inspires you to get out there and start forming your own opinions.

We also created a system of badges to highlight campgrounds that have very distinct personalities. These badges do not mean that these are the best campgrounds in the book. Instead, we hope that they help you seek out certain types of experiences in a quick, easy, and fun fashion. We have also arranged the campgrounds by badge in an appendix in the back of the book for easy browsing by campground personality.
